Re: [Talk-ca] Google Map Maker now in Canada
I think people will participate because they will get a warm fuzzy feeling from being able to point at Google Maps and say I did that. True, you can get a warm fuzzy from pointing at OSM and saying I did that, but Google Maps has a much higher profile in the non-geo* community than OSM does. Personally, I'm going to continue doing my thing in OSM and fix things in Google Maps, too, because who doesn't like warm fuzzies? --G -Original Message- From: Connors, Bernie (SNB) bernie.conn...@snb.ca Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 11:36:57 To: 'G. Re: [Talk-ca] Talk-ca Digest, Vol 44, Issue 12
I agree with Michael at this point, since OSM has a rather restrictive license anyways thanks to the new CTs. Would be nice to know the status of moving stuff to map maker. Personally, I dont care what service I am putting my maps on, i just want my mapping to be used, and google is years ahead in terms of map presentation. Re: [Talk-ca] [Talk-us] High-visibility Vests
I have about a dozen of them and am happy to lend them for mapping party purposes. They look like this: http://schaaltreinen.nl/openstreetmap-hi-viz-vest If it looks a little wrinkly, that's because I brought them from Europe ;) Martijn On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 6:12 PM, Paul Norman penor...@mac.com wrote: In another thread, the subject of high-visibility vests came up and I was wondering if there were any of these in North America. The wiki says the existing ones are sold by the OpenCycleMap shop, but they are listed as “temporarily unavailable”. In any case, shipping clothing from Europe is likely not the best option. Additionally, the vests aren’t likely to meet North American high-visibility standards. In my day job I deal with high-vis vests too much, so I am familiar with this subject area. I believe a vest meeting CSA Z96, ANSI/ISEA 107 with “MOT” style trim would meet the requirements for use on US federally funded rights of way (See Federal Register/Vol 71, No 226/Friday November 24, 2006, p. 67792-67800), BC MOT roadways (Technical Circular T-09/05), other BC roadways (OHSR 8.24 + G8.24-1), Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta and I would expect the rest of North America. The FWHA put the normal price of a vest at $25. The maximum area of a non-retroreflective logo on a vest is 100 square cm. ___ Talk-us mailing list talk...@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us -- martijn van exel geospatial omnivore 1109 1st ave #2 salt lake city, ut 84103 801-550-5815 http://oegeo.wordpress.com ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
[Talk-ca] Coastline on low zoom levels
Hi Everyone The sparse selection of North American lakes at low zoom levels on the mapnik layer has become embarrassing. Could we get the file used to generate the coastlines at low resolutions updated. Lakes missing: - Southern half of Lake Winnipeg - Lake Manitoba - Almost all of Great Slave Lake - Great Salt Lake - Lake of the Woods - Smallwood Reservoir - Lake Simcoe - Lesser Slave Lake And many others around the world. [Talk-ca] Bus stops and recommended cycle routes in Ottawa
Has anyone sorted out what can be done yet? There is a gtfs file available but it appears to be under an Ottawa city license which doesn't appear to permit importing it into OSM. The other hassle is currently there is little consistency in things like how the 4 digit 560 number is stored or if a bus shelter is labelled or even who the operator is which could be Greyhound or STO as well as OC. Currently it appears to be a bit hit and miss which is a pity as currently OSM is the only source that shows the footpaths leading to bus stops. Cycle routes again these are in Google but some recommended routes appear in the city's printed maps but because there is nothing visible on the ground they cannot be included in OSM because of licensing restrictions.
