[Talk-ca] [montreal] Montreal Mapping Weekend

2008-07-13 Thread Nicolas Marchildon
Hello,

It has been a year I wanted to participate in a mapping weekend in
Montreal, and I have now decided to organize one. I would like to know
who's interested, and what you think of September 20-21.

Following the Mapping Weekend Howto, I created a page with a 'cake'
diagram to divide Montreal in manageable chunks:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Montreal_mapping_party

I would like to start announcing the event end of next week, two months
before the event. That should give plenty of time to reach the community
at large. If you have any idea where to post this, please let me know.

Please reply to the talk-ca@openstreetmap.org mailing-list, keeping the
[montreal] tag in the subject, as I would otherwise not get your
replies. Also, feel free to forward this mail to any person you think
might be interested in participating!

Allo,

Je ne serais peut-être pas à montréal durant ce weekend.

Mais autrement: bonne idée.

Here we go. Here's the French blog post announcing the event:

I have changed the meeting place because Café L'ESCALIER opens only at
11AM and I want to meet at 10.

I'm sure we could do a party in or around Calgary, for instance Airdrie
needs a lot of work (only a few roads are done) if there is interest.

Sam & I got together for a bit of mapping around Victoria on Thurs
night. We plan on having another party on the 31st.

Great news indeed. I didn't know that. I just left a comment on
Nicolas' page mentioning the Sherbrooke party.

I'd also left a comment on the SQIL's site
http://2007.sqil.info/fr/annonce-dates-sqil-2008 hoping to make a Québec
national level event, but I would be thrilled if the event had
instantiations from coast to coast. One event that could be used for
leverage is the Software Freedom Day (Sep 20). Mapping one's own
neighborhood is a pretty potent realization of the principles of free
software especially that of sharing with one's neighbour. I was
thinking yesterday that a mapping party would also be a prime example of
applying the principle of "act locally, think globally".

Since there is no scaling issues here (no central organization, just
samll parties), anybody has ideas as to how to generate widespread
interest in a giant mapping party and get some coverage in the news ?
Maybe pointing the media towards other mapping parties that will occur
before Sep 20 and mentioning Canada will be partying on Sep 20-21 too ?

Cheers,

Yves

Wonderful news. I'm thrilled to see so much Canadian OSM activity.
Since Montreal, Sherbrooke and Hamilton (Ontario) are all looking at a
mapping party for the weekend of September 20th, perhaps we can make
this a Trans-Canada OSM Fiesta, or something?

Jason, you have mentioned and an interest in a party in Alberta.
Richard D. you have Hamilton under control. Yves is getting Sherbrooke
going. Are any others interested in adding parties?

This is exciting.

Best regards,
Richard
