Over on the #osm-ca IRC user Wbski has finished up the BC areas, so thats 1 province. Im just working as i go along (virtually across Canada) and filling in what i can. For the aboriginal lands, it's a bit harder as the names are all in CAPS and need to be fixed :) Slowely but surley it gets done, that's why we croud source :) Cheers, Sam > > Tyler > ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

It only makes sense to work on that data before getting ahead of myself to other sources really. Winnipeg has a LONG way to go before it's at a state where someone would look at it and say, "Wow, what a great map.". I routinely fix missing street names, crossing ways that should connect, and ways that end near a road where they should really connect. Fixing up all this in itself is a huge undertaking. I think for now I'll stick with trying to detail out Winnipeg since I have the local knowledge to do my best work here. However, I'll have to take a look at the protected areas and aboriginal lands -- if it's something that I don't need local knowledge for I could add it to my list of things to do. :) Tyler ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
Re: [Talk-ca] Approaching civic government for access to GIS data..
My approach is, build it and they will come. Have you seen the CanMatrix geoTIFF & CanTopo PDFs? This digital paper map, includes more features that are not available in canvec, such as municiple boundaries (and in BC) it includes backroad logging roads. These PDFs can be freely traced. Anyway, the point is, i think is better to fully exhaust the resources we already have, as there is a TONNE of data available to us. Once winnipeg sees the top quality map that OSM is becomming, i thing they would approach the OSM Community. Anyway, the pdf re-discovery was just in the past few days. Were chatting about that on #osm-ca IRC. [Talk-ca] Approaching civic government for access to GIS data..
Hello, I'm considering writing a letter to the civic government here in Winnipeg to ask for permission/access to their GIS data. The aerial imagery alone available on their website is a HUGE treasure-trove of information; 20cm 2009 aerial imagery!!! :) Has anyone ever approached the local government in this manner? If so is there any "starting point" letter I could use that someone has? Thanks!
