I will take your suggestions. I like when people gives good ideas. Right
now, I have my two hands deleting the current boundaries. Thanks,

Michel

Indeed... a little push and a shove, and I was able to send Michel
over the precipice.

We can sit on our hands and talk about what needs to be done, and
argue about the minutia, but sooner or later someone has to DO
something. The geopolitical boundaries is a big dataset, but also
relatively benign... It gives us a little bit of room to learn and
play, while not really creating a HUGE controversial impact. The NRN
needs to be the set that we make sure gets done right the first time.

I suggested using Alberta as a guinea pig, but Michel appears to have
done all of Canada. This works out okay, as it gives others exposure
to the process as well...

It is interesting to see the provincial boundary along the Great
Divide finally... although there are some little problems that will
need repair. There's a hole in the border, and a section that looks
like it's missing some nodes by the Athabasca Glacier.

Like any OSM addition, we'll need to vet all of the GeoBase data that
is imported.

I still have my usual beef about the rendering rules being set up for
the tiny little countries in Europe where a municipal boundary defines
an area of a couple square miles. Zoom level 9 is the largest size map
you can have and still see the provincial boundary. In Canada, I would
have provincial boundaries visible to at least zoom level 4 or even
level 3. Same for state boundaries in the USA.

Is there a way to override the default rendering rules? It would be
good to be able to use the same boundary definition, but be able to
have the provincial boundary min zoom level be overridden for areas
like Canada.

Dear Michel,

Bravo. The first run of the border import is a wonderful improvement,
even if imperfect. Thank you for doing it.

For the re-upload, may I suggest these changes?

source = "name of your conversion script and version" # then make it
available on the wiki / SVN as GPL?

created_by = "name of your upload script and version" # then make it
available on the wiki / SVN as GPL?

nat_ref does not apply in my opinion. OSM expects ref for highway
shields. Use a new tag like geobase:nat_ref = "nat_ref#" so that it is
"namespaced" and does not break other uses of nat_ref.

Use geobase:uuid = "uuid#" where geobase provides them.

Best regards,
Richard

No, they will not cause problems! I am, however, really looking forward
to your new upload and having the Geopolitical boundaries within OSM on
a permanent basis. With your upload we went from just talking to, in
fact, using the GeoBase data that we were given permission to use to
make an improvement within OSM. Your upload was the first visible step
to incorporating the GeoBase data. And the data looked good too!

Thanks for the work.

It will be easier to reprocess all of them because I do not have to manage
the updates (nodes to keep and new nodes). Let me know if the deletions
cause you a problem. The new file with boundaries at 500 nodes is ready for
an upload. But first I have to delete the current ones.

[Talk-ca] Deleting Ways

Michel,

Are you deleting all of the ways that you loaded with the bulk upload or
only those that are exceeding the limit. Those geopolitical boundaries
that consist of only a relatively small number of nodes are probably
fine to leave within OSM.
