I went through and checked every box, put in the projection, and last
night got an image. Today without changing anything, it doesn't
work...

Yeah, that's what I have, and know as much as you do about the settings.

I don't think you have to select layers because they are specified in
the URL.  In other words, the program seems to automatically check for
you.  For instance, the URL includes "designated_areas" and that layer
is checked on my system.  However, you can check whichever ones you want.

Do you have to select layers in the Layers window? The layers window
gets populated with a tree that has all the available layers.

What about Projection, Tile it, Zoom levels, Image format, and Styles settings?

Did all that you have outlined, and get nothing useful for my efforts.
