be a lag between 6-12 months. CTIS plans for 2 releases a year. But depends
on the timing with the provinces we may miss last minute data delivery. Also
I prefer working with Geobase tiling for import. It is easier to work 13
tiles (NRN) than with 13000 NTS 50K tiles. For the National Hydro Network,
Geobase tile is the drainage areas. There are about 1000 of them still
easier than NTS tiles.

With respect to the road network one thing to consider is update frequency.
The Canvec data is updated twice a year, geobase seems to publish when they
get the data ready.

Right now only 4 provinces/territories have street names and 3 with
addresses. I think we are going to be very anxious for the updates that add
street names to the other provinces. I am not sure how far canvec lags
behind the geobase updates.

Pulling the road data from geobase doesn't exclude pulling additional layers
from canvec. I think we would still want to deal with each layer (or
related layers) as seperate projects.

[Talk-ca] GeoBase Import Rev 2 - where we stand now CanVec (like Ibycus before combined maps)

2008-12-08 Thread Sam Vekemans
Ok so Brent threw a wrench at me... sorry for the verbal diarrhea... lol :)
http://geogratis.gc.ca/geogratis/en/product/search.do?id=28954

Ok, so we have a website... it's NOT geoBase, yet it's Natural Resources
Canada, also from the Earth Sciences devision. ... (and aparently it also
passed as OK for OSM load)

You can go through it, and download the 'Ibycus topo 3.0 (CanVec topo
mapset)' .. as a shape file, as a ESRI shape file.
we can download and import all but those tiles that have lots of OSM data
already there.

The import script is what needs to be worked on, so that on all the points,
ways, and areas it all has the 'GeoGratis' or 'GeoBase' or 'CanVec' or
'Natural Resources Canada on it.

... and so our challenge is to make sure that as long as every point and way
and shape has a reference number, were golden. So this
'extract-transform-load' can be done for just those complicated tiles that
has lots of OSM data... .. because we don't want to see the ghost lines.

and so, for those few tiles that are left, thats where the creative script
happens.

An option would be to go ahead and start with the script on how to convert
CanVec Canada GeoGratis datasets. .. the same script is used for all of
them.

Here the big assumption, that the same script that is used to convert most
of the tiles can be used again which will be able to check for updates when
new CanVec data is available.

So anyway...
No bother with GeoBase anymore... as it's CanVec which has all the data
already done.

Cheers,
Sam

P.S. My hopes is that i make a little sence.

and ya...
I think we all can use Gmail chat.. that would work?... facebook chat is
available to.
... at least with the digest, that makes us (me) need to wait till the next
digest to get all the messages. We can all visit Tofino... :)

And a final bite.. im just looking at 092B06 shape file and see that its
made of 44 shape files 1 file for each type of data. .. i just opened 1 at
random (with gpsmapedit) and guessed on what it could be. .. and opened it,
and it was the residential streets... so im sure theres probably a listing
somewhere of what each code represents... so we just need to make sure thats
right across the board.
and ya.. it looks like that topo data (that we dont need is new stuff) ...
but it would be good to keep and save as a layer, and to make a garmin map
out of just that file type. ..
..
And ya.. another little point.
... Is it just the roads that we dont like the ghost lines for? .. its kinda
hard to find out about how many users have put in ALL the CanVec data
available. .. anyway. Thats alot of info to take in ...
as now that CanVec is the new GeoBase.

Do we still want to download the road data when it's available as CanVec???
anyway... the shapefile name code of the last 7 digits is 176 for the
roads.. and 148 for the water.
... anyway.. this job i can do. I'll make a list (if it's not done
already)

Cheers,
Sam Vekemans
