Re: [Talk-ca] Orleans entering and finding addresses

2010-03-25 Thread john whelan
Geonames postcode doesn't seem to recognise Canadian post codes or at least
the ones I put in which I have entered some time ago.

http://www.geonames.org/postalcode-search.html?q=K4A+1M7country=CA

However merkley, ontario, ca us found but merkley, orleans, ca is not in
OpenStreetMap Nominatim http://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/

going further K1E3P6,ca points to Merkley Drive on the map with an address
of 1675 however this post code is one that should be on tenth line, a street
some 500 meters away, which has a number 1675, the numbers on Merkley are
all below 1,000. There is no entry I can see in Josm for where the map
points to.

Could some one please give me the correct way to enter an address. Should
the postcode be entered K4A1M7 or K$A 1M7 for example.

Does http://openstreetmap.ca/ contain any advice on how to enter addresses
so they can be found?

Is there a way to find out where K1E3P6,ca gets its information to point to
the wrong place so this can be corrected?

Thanks John

Perhaps 'place=suburb'(1) would work? This is how the neighbourhoods
(Kensington Market, Chinatown, Church-Wellesley Village, etc.) of Toronto
have been put on the map.(2) This seems like it would be appropriate for
areas like The Glebe too, though I don't think anyone writes The Glebe or
 Kensington Market on their mail.

If I wish to do a search for an address on the map what does GeoNames
 http://www.geonames.org/ and OpenStreetMap Nominatim
 http://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/ use?

I haven't been able to find the correct way of searching for places in my
area using those services. I think it might have to do with the 'is_in' tag
not being set for most objects.

Just to add complexity K1E3P6,ca has now returned the correct location on
the map. Looking in JOSM the postcode on that address is entered K1E3P6 and
not as K1E 3P6.

Thoughts?

Thanks

[Talk-ca] Orleans

2010-03-24 Thread john whelan
To the east of Ottawa exists the district of Orleans. All roads are
actually within the city of Ottawa. Orleans has never existed as a
municipal entity, only for Canada Post, essentially it is a collection of
postcodes. The correct Postal address for streets and roads is Orleans.

Should the city be entered as Orleans as per Canada Post's address or as
Ottawa?

Thanks John

Hi,
I'd use address:city=Orleans on the node or area of the building

But only If thats what local people write as their address. The actual
6 character code is what is known.

-same thing as 'Etobicoke' where the people who live there dont write 'Toronto'.

imo,
Sam
