[Talk-ca] Rendering Island names in OSM

2010-11-12 Thread Pierre Beland
In OSM, there is a clear rule to render cities depending on there size (ie.
cities, town, village, etc). But I see nothing for Islands. It seems that it
is thought for small islands only.

Here is the example of a long island that cannot be identified properly. The
Anticosti Island is 250km long. I place a Place=Island tag at the center of the
island. You can see it at zoom level 12 and higher. See how it is rendered
comparatively to the size of the island.

zoom=12, we see the Island name

zoom=10, we see the Island in is entirety, but no name
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=49.5&lon=-63&zoom=11&layers=M

Is there any solution to render properly in OSM?

Dear Pierre,

You can make suggestions for changes to the existing rendering styles.
And you can make your own rendering style for your own use.

Richard,

This is more general than how I would like to render my individual map. I think
that it refers to the general tagging schema of Openstreetmap for entities such
as island and lakes.

If you look at Liberty island in the port of New-York. You see that, with
Mapnik, the name of the island is well rendered at zoom level 13. The name is
ever bigger than the island.

For the Great Lakes, also, we cannot see the names on the OSM maps.

Thats bring more questions.

Are they any tags that could permit a certain hierarchisation for rendering of
entities like we have for city names?

Is this non representation of entities like Great Lakes or important island is
a choice that have been clearly expressed in the Openstreetmap community?

If not, in wich instance, should we discuss about that?
