[Talk-ca] new goodies on OSM
Dear All, The London hack weekend starts in a few hours in London (yay!), England (oh.) One of these days I'll organize a hack weekend in London, Ontario, just for laughs. Interesting things come out of these hack weekends and sometimes we see the results right away, like squashed bugs or new tools, and other times the changes are rolled out on a schedule. The OSM API change from 0.5 to 0.6 was largely decided at a previous hack weekend, then rolled out as scheduled during server maintenance if I recall correctly. So, I'm looking forward to interesting things coming out of the hack weekend. You might enjoy watching the dev irc channel if you want to follow some of the discussions going on at the hack weekend, but really, you have to be there to get the full benefit. Two new things have appeared on OSM.org in the last two days, before the hack weekend even started. Today, the layer selector (the blue + top right of the map) was changed. The seldom-updated nonames layer was removed, and two new layers were added. The Transport map shows public transportation infrastructure, and the Open MapQuest map is a general purpose map. We want more people to understand you can make special purpose maps from the same OSM data. Yesterday, a new version of Potlatch2 was provided on the site. You'll know that you are using the new version when you realize that you have been using the map zoom buttons on the top left, rather than their previous top right location. I didn't even realize that it was a change when I first saw it. :-) Best regards, Richard ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

Before I saw this e-mail I was just thinking now that the transport layer is more visible, it would be great if people would learn to map bus routes. It's a bit more tricky due to dealing with relations, so one of the oh-so-simple weait tutorials would be wonderful to have. -- Gregory o...@livingwithdragons.com http://www.livingwithdragons.com ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

See for example the coastline issues in Atlantic Canada: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=45.31&lon=-63.13&zoom=7&layers=T . Perhaps unintentional, but this rendering can help us a lot cleaning up after certain imports. So, I hope this rendering won't be adjusted soon... :) During the import I also strongly suspect that the Canvec data contains railroads which do no longer exist. For example, in Québec a part of them have been converted to cycleways. Perhaps someone with good knowledge about those cycleways can retag them. It looks like they were done over existing data (which may of just been the coastlines) and not correctly tied into the coast. As a plea to anyone considering CanVec imports near an ocean, reconsider. These are *very* hard to get right and problems may not be obvious because the coastlines do not re-render right away. Doing them right is also very time-consuming because the CanVec tagging on the coast is wrong. ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

After getting no response, I am currently working on going through this user's changesets, which appear to be mainly CanVec imports not conducted in accordance with the guidelines (not from a separate account) and will be reverting those done over existing data or that are otherwise badly broken. ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
