Re: [Talk-GB] "OS boundaries and 'mid-level' mapping data to be released for free re-use including commerically"

Still, great if it happened, about time too. I think a very good and useful test of how 'free' it is will be if it can be integrated into OSM or if we need to carry on with our dodgy 50 yo boundary data. My intention of working hard on the OSM boundary data a few months ago was to ensure that we had a credible (poor) dataset which would be used unless the OS data was released. The big test will be if the OS also continue to sell the data as well. If they do then it isn't fully free. If they don't then they have nothing to loose from making it fully free. Personally I think we can actually help it become free enough by a little appropriate pushing in the intervening period. This is interesting though: "Data relating to electoral and local authority boundaries as well as postcode areas would be released for free re-use... Possibly we have have some accurate boundary information soon! By 'mid- level mapping' do they mean Meridian I wonder? "MAKING PUBLIC DATA PUBLIC - "The Prime Minister and Communities Secretary John Denham will today announce that the public will have more access to Ordnance Survey maps from next year, as part of a Government drive to open up data to improve transparency. "Data relating to electoral and local authority boundaries as well as postcode areas would be released for free re-use, including commercially. Mid-scale digital mapping information would also be released in the same way. http://nds.coi.gov.uk/Content/detail.aspx?NewsAreaId=2&ReleaseID=408663&SubjectId=15&DepartmentMode=true Regards, Peter Miller ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

It is listed in map features, the amenity section is not in alphabetical order but grouped as similar functions, so it gets put in the medical-ish stuff.
