[Talk-GB] Retour de l'autoroute britannique

2011-12-08 Thread Richard Fairhurst
Google have finally done it: they've switched from TeleAtlas to Google
map data in the UK.

Set your stopwatches for the first newspaper story about man drives off
cliff - '...but Google told me it was a road'!. Some of their choices
are, shall we say, a little heroic.

cheers
Richard

Oh dear...

Some highlights in my area:

http://tools.geofabrik.de/mc/?mt0=googlemapmt1=mapniklon=1.36799lat=52.60886zoom=16

This is a very bumpy single track public bridleway with gates at either
end. It's actually part of NCN1 but an alternative, longer route is
provided for those wanting a smoother ride.

http://tools.geofabrik.de/mc/?mt0=googlemapmt1=mapniklon=1.22878lat=52.62211zoom=16

That cycle path is bollarded at either end and the track is for private
use and has locked gates. So no, there is no access by motorvehicle to
the university from the West.

http://tools.geofabrik.de/mc/?mt0=googlemapmt1=mapniklon=1.23534lat=52.65464zoom=15

You've got to be kidding me... Marriot's way is a disused railway path
which is now a cycle path with horses allowed too. Motorvehicles are
not allowed. The bridlepaths are all unpaved and muddy.

And many more.

Sorry, Google, but there is no substitute for surveys and local knowledge.

Yes indeed. Just looked at Fernhurst, W Sussex for instance. The place is
absolutely crawling with non-existent roads.

Seems anything tagged with highway=track in OSM would qualify as a road in
that...

[Talk-GB] Hampshire 2012 - map the county's footpaths

2011-12-08 Thread Nick Whitelegg

Hello everyone,

2012 could be the year in which we complete, or almost complete, all the
rights of way in some English counties. One likely target is my local county -
Hampshire. OSM road coverage of many parts of the UK is virtually complete in
many areas, but footpaths are still lagging behind. However some counties
appear to be getting some way towards completion and one of them is Hampshire,
which has seen footpath coverage grow significantly over the last three years
or so. While I don't know for certain, I think that if enough people are up
for it, there's a good chance all the rural rights of way in the county can be
complete by the end of next year.

I've created a wiki page for this as well as a cake. If you're keen to
participate please add your name to the list of areas:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Hampshire_2012

(I'm also keen BTW to deal with a possible licencing issue here. A
long-standing contributor has mapped many footpaths in Hampshire already but
has not signed up to the CTs. Naturally I'm keen not to see all his hard work
lost, and TBH, while I'm licence-neutral, I've got better things to do with my
time than re-mapping what he's already done! Is there a practical solution to
this? e.g. the day before the licence-changeover day, could all his data be
downloaded and made available as a CC-by-SA .osm file, and then minor edits
applied by someone who's signed up to the CTs to ensure that the data won't be
deleted?)

No, you can't do that I'm afraid. If it's his original data, he hasn't
signed up to the CTs, and it's not an utterly trivial change (which it
doesn't sound like it is), then it should be and will be dropped.

I'd suggest just dropping him a friendly e-mail, explaining what you're
hoping to do in terms of completing the Hampshire footpaths next year, and
asking if he might reconsider.

cheers
Richard
