Hi,
Some of you might have been aware that (due to the combination of some rather
savage and non-constructive criticism by one individual on the mailing list
plus a lack of time to work on it) the kothic-js version of Freemap
(free-map.org.uk) has been replaced for the last 4 months or so by a "mashup"
of OS OpenData and OpenStreetMap footpaths.
However, as a result of an increased enthusiasm towards all things OSM at State
of the Map (making me wish to return to a pure-OSM solution), plus a few
supportive comments from other people there, the kothic version of Freemap is
now back up again.
I do want to point out 1 or 2 things though in the wake of the former
criticism. It does not aim to be the definitive OSM walking map of the UK, it
is strictly a hobbyist rather than a professional project. It's a way to
scratch an itch and to allow me to play around with interesting new client side
rendering technologies. It might run slow, particularly if the tiles for your
area are missing (though I have implemented a cron-based re-rendering system to
re-render old data tiles). A number of things (less-than-great design and
cartography skills on my part, plus lack of time and limitations of hosting)
mean that it has to be that way. That said, if you are a web designer and/or
cartographer or can offer coding contributions or hosting, then all these
things will be welcome!
It's doubtful it will see many updates in the near future as I am focusing on
fixmypaths and the augmented reality stuff at the moment.
Nick
