According to http://wiki.osm.org/wiki/Platform_Status, faffy is down
and looks like it has been for some time. Does anyone know of an
update to this?

I believe faffy has been down since July last year.

As far as I can tell the last update sent to this list was the following:

2015-03-25 Thread SK53
I think it's safe to say that faffy is no more

.

As this server was the repository of OSM out-of-copyright imagery as well
as the Hampshire aerials (& I suspect Surrey) it may be sensible to also
remove these as imagery sources in editors.

It may also be the right time to raise the issue of a group supporting a UK
(or GB) specific server, for specific rendering & other tiled imagery.

We have had a Scottish server for some time, you know.

We have plans and dreams for the Scottish server, mostly, plus a broken
Rails prototype, and a lovely animated GIF of a massive saltire.

[Talk-GB] GB postcodes

2015-03-25 Thread Chris Hill
I've just updated the postcode overlays for GB to the latest available
(Feb 2015) data from both ONS and Codepoint Open.

You can find more information for the ONS overlay here:
http://onspd.raggedred.net/ and the Codepoint Open overlay here:
http://codepoint.raggedred.net/

AFAIK the two datasets I display are the same, though the ONS data does
include Northern Ireland postcodes (BT) but I exclude these as the
licence for them is not acceptable for OSM.

Re: [Talk-GB] GB postcodes

2015-03-25 Thread Mick Orridge
On the subject of postcodes, I have generated approximate regions from
the ONS postcode data for postcode areas, districts and sectors which
can be downloaded as shp files here:-

http://www.gismosoftware.co.uk/postcode-data.php

They are free to download and use under the ODbL license.

The generation method is detailed here:-

http://www.gismosoftware.co.uk/generation-method.php

Please don't add these to the OSM database as they are not real objects,
and are only an approximation.

I guess they could be made available as overlays in the same way as the
postcode points, I'll investigate when I get a few spare minutes!

They could also be used to check for incorrect postcodes held in the OSM
database e.g. an NE postcode found in the NG postcode area would almost
certainly be incorrect but care would be need near the polygon edges as
a DE postcode just within the NG area may well be correct due to the
generation method.

Here's the ONS licence page:-

http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/guide-method/geography/beginner-s-guide/licences/index.html

As I understand it these data are release under the Open Government
Licence which means we may re-use this information (not including logos
or Northern Ireland data) free of charge in any format or medium, under
the terms of the relevant data owners' licence. We do need to credit the
copyright holders (Royal Mail, National Statistics, Ordnance Survey,
etc). This is not legal advice (IANAL).

That's a bit rude.

Postcodes are very valuable for routing - people outside OSM use them
very heavily for that. Postcodes are not even a minority concern.

What use are post box ref numbers ? Who is really bothered about collection
times ? The nearest post box is useful info.

I can't imagine anyone using postcodes for routing. Postcodes, I guess are
only of use to Royal Mail for the purpose of organising delivery rounds and
abbreviating locations inaccurately.

?
Postcodes are GREAT for routing. It's far quicker to type the postcode
as destination than a long address. If it takes me to the correct street
I can usually find the building by myself, if I haven't entered the
house number. Postcodes every time.

I do use them, when I usee Google Maps - when I want an approximate
route it's the quickest way to pin down place.

In the UK (at least in London) a postcode is a very small zone so it's
very useful. In other countries a postcode is too big to be useful.

Not to mention that there are streets with the same name or almost the
same name so the postcode serves to double check that the street is the
wanted one.
