A full set of high resolution OS map scans is being gradually uploaded
to Wikimedia Commons and indexed by historic county. These are very
large files, 10,000 pixels wide, so are both in TIFF and jpeg format
to make reuse easier.

These are of 'specialized' interest, but I would think could be of use
to both Wiki Loves Monuments projects and readers of this email list
interested in early maps and geo-related experiments. The maps show
plenty of fine detail, including inns/pubs, churches, bridges etc.
Those that still exist will be likely to be listed and protected, and
those that are not, may still be great photography subjects. Note that
to view the maps, Commons' in-built ZoomViewer is useful but it
appears to be broken today, so you may have to settle for examining
the full size jpeg in-browser.

As I write this, the uploads are working through "B", so the projects
is going to take several weeks to complete. If there are ideas for how
better to categorize or template these maps, feel free to drop a note
on my Commons talk page. It is always possible to do some post-upload
housekeeping or adjusting the way the uploads are currently getting
formatted.

Thanks,
Fae

date I felt I couldnt use that as input.

There is no 445 Manchester Road, Kearsley, BOLTON, according to the
Royal Mail's postcode finder.

[Talk-GB] Chesterfield Pub meeting 19th Sept

2017-09-13 Thread SK53
The East Midlands (aka Nottingham) pub meeting will be held at the Market
Tavern on Tuesday 19th September in CHESTERFIELD.

I've talked about having one of the Nottingham pub meetings in
Chesterfield, and decided as September is the last reasonable month for
this year to do it.

I would like to extend an invitation to any OSMers in the vicinity and
particularly folk around Sheffield & Rotherham.

I will be outside the pub an hour beforehand if anyone fancies trying to
find some bits of Chesterfield which needs mapping.

Best wishes,

Jerry

Ah, you spotted that too.

I directed him to Overpass Turbo in the comments on his previous post; as
yet no reply :)

Re: [Talk-GB] "an extraordinary quirk in the UK address system"

2017-09-13 Thread SK53
It's been done: http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/51951288.

Unfortunately reading the comments I noticed a remark about a No. 441A and
I realised my interpolation must have had an error. On checking I found
that I'd placed the known address one house over. This means that
continuing the interpolation means that the last house on the Bolton side
is 445. As the 441/441a is from an OS Map of uncertain date I felt I
couldnt use that as input.

My suspicion is that the numbering coincidence was deliberate. There are
long gaps on the Bolton side which would surely have allowed them to chose
any particular number range.
