Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Chad Brook at Edgabton

2017-12-08 Thread Andy Robinson
Andy,

As a possible future aid I added some pre M6 alignment for the Holbrook
drainage area using the 1947 OOC OS 1:25k. The ways only have a note tag on
them of "Drainage courses associated with Holbrook from circa 1947 OS 1:25k
mapping". Even in 1947 the thin blue lines are not continuous and was not even
present on the mapping from just north of the now Perry Beeches campus right
down to the Perry reservoir by the canal. The Holbrook name doesn’t even appear
anywhere on the map so perhaps it’s a modern name. It's also possible that
there was little more than a drainage route back before the landscape was
concreted. The Thornbridge Avenue area was already built out by 1947 of course.
A tall order to find the culverted route. Old construction plans for the M6
would probably show it.

Cheers
Andy

Sorry, this way:

https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/543761345

I managed to trace most of the route using Bing.

Re: [Talk-GB] Christmas / New Year Footpath Mapping meet

2017-12-08 Thread SK53
Hi Andy,

Indeed it is a potential fallback and no distance from Rosliston. The
actual centre and adjacent woods are very well mapped though.

2017-12-08 Thread Andy Robinson
Jerry,

A good place to meet and get excellent food is the Hub café at the Rosliston
Forestry Centre. http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/208252961 They are open daily
from 10 till 4 during the winter months.

Cheers

Dear All,

I'll shortly be sending a link to a Doodle poll to try & select a suitable time
for a Midlands footpath mapping meeting after Christmas.

In all likelihood, the meeting will be centred on Coton-in-the-Elms in S.
Derbyshire, a few miles S of Swadlincote and SE of Burton-on-Trent. The
location is easily accessed from the A42 and A38.

This area is odd: many paths in woodland areas of the National Forest have been
mapped in great detail, but there are still lots of missing footpaths as well
as ones missing detail, particularly centred on Coton-in-the-Elms. Detail in
the village is again very patchy: some shops and schools, but on a flying visit
yesterday I added 4 pubs.

The main caveat about the area is that most of the pubs are either not open at
lunchtime or don't do food. The one that does is perfectly pleasant, but seems
to be under new management and has mixed reviews recently (Bulls Head
 , Rosliston); and unfortunately
The Black Horse in
Coton-in-the-Elms which is in the Good Beer Guide only does filled cobs
(sandwich rolls to those uninitiated in E. Mids dialect) and may not be open
for lunch. So we'll probably have to take our chances with the former.

The geology is Mercia Mudstone, and much of it is arable, so likely to be muddy
and claggy underfoot.

This umap

shows the status of footpath mapping in the area in August. I'll update it
shortly & add Warwickshire & Staffordshire paths (extracted from my EMids PRoW
data).

Regards,

Jerry
