From the many locals I've talked to there is really no consensus on pronunciation and everyone has their own favourite theory, common among them being something about posh people or something about which side of the Welsh and English bridges people were on back in the day. For more fun on the numerous and hyper-local variations in accent, I'd recommend http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01ljwm4 You'd be a brave mapper indeed if you tried to add a definitive phonetic pronunciation to many place names! Shrewsbury is pronounced Shrew, a in the tiny animal, by locals. Have just asked someone born there, his comment was its only pronounced Shrowsbury by posh people who aren't from there, and those who go to shrowsbury school. Re: [Talk-GB] Pronunciation of place names
Some sort of lookup database for pronunciation would be good, where we can add problem names a they are found. Some more particular problems I have heard frequently are Vale of Belvoir, Groby, Whitwick and thats is just some in Leicestershire. We could concentrate our efforts on acses where the pronunciation is problematic; such as "Reading" or (as mentioned already) "Clough". There is already the possibility, discussed in the blog post comment I mentioned, of automating some of this; and like all information tags, this would be optional; no-one has to add anything. -- Andy Mabbett @pigsonthewing http://pigsonthewing.org.uk ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

Andy Mabbett wrote: Can we solve the problem of how to do this, in OSM? Not a direct solution to the problem, but: My quick-and-extremely dirty approach was to search and replace "problem strings" between the OSM extract download and mkgmap that creates the Nuvi map - I think that it currently just changes "Clough" to "Cluff". If we were to use this method then we would need to tag a lot of road names, as in my experience these are the names satnavs use. It is rare for them to actually pronounce a place name but road names are often named after the place they go to. My friend Terence Eden has some interesting comments on documenting the pronunciation of place names, in this blog post: http://shkspr.mobi/blog/2013/01/its-pronounced-reading/ on which I've added a comment.
