Your knowledge of copyright is probably better than mine, but unless the British Library renounce their ownership of the scans or UK law changes (which is possible) I would say none. :( On Fri, 29 Jan 2016 at 23:50, Andy Mabbett wrote: > What's the potential to get these crown-copyright-expired maps as an OSM > layer, for tracing? > > http://www.bl.uk/collection-guides/war-office-archive > > -- > Andy Mabbett > @pigsonthewing > http://pigsonthewing.org.uk > ___ > Talk-GB mailing list > Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org > https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb > ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

Great news that they've been OGLd. I feel less depressed now :) Andy, I respectfully beg to differ. Crown copyright does expire after 50 years but owners of scans claim 'sweat of the brow' grants them copyright of the images made. Even the people at NPE Maps claim it http://www.npemap.org.uk/tileLicence.html but they renounce any claim on derived data. I don't necessarily agree that simply scanning something is fair grounds for copyright ownership. Professional quality scans and georectifying does cost money though. Professional quality scans and georectifying > does cost money though. Neither do the courts ... Although I could not find the link I was looking for. The courts have basically rejected the idea that simply scanning a document restores it's copyright. There has to be 'substantial new material' and then only that new material - such as perhaps providing translations of names - can be copyright? Paying to use the facilities to access scanned documents is not unreasonable, it is only the claim to 'ownership via copyright' which is not enforceable by law? https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/request_justification_of_claims makes interesting reading, but the arguments do seem floored ... and some key links no longer work. That the resulting archive has a database of OCR translations which is their IP sort of overrides the the complaint, although the quality is sometimes rather suspect and does need better quality checking. If one is having to pay a substantial sum to access data then it's quality should match. It is questionable though if material that should be freely available via the British Library should now be the base for a third party chargeable service? The National Library of Scotland does seem to be doing a much better job for the UK than the British Library is? With much more open access while almost inevitably having to charge for things that the British Library should perhaps be providing? -- Lester Caine - G8HFL - Contact - http://lsces.co.uk/wiki/?page=contact L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://lsces.co.uk EnquirySolve - http://enquirysolve.com/ Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://medw.co.uk Rainbow Digital Media - http://rainbowdigitalmedia.co.uk ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

There is/was a mapwarper instance for wikimedia. I don't have the details to hand, but perhaps Tim Waters will be able to tell us. I think the problem with older maps of Africa and Asia is that a lot more has changed than in Britain in the same period. The set of maps which BL has digitised which I'd be very interested in are city insurance maps. Certainly Leicester, Nottingham & Belfast are covered. As far as I know these have not been made available on wikimedia. Re: [Talk-GB] UK war office maps of Africa digitised
Hi folks, I'm the developer of mapwarper.net and the wikimaps (wikimedia) warper http://warper.wmflabs.org/ also. The wikimaps warper is part of the Wikimaps project https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimaps lead by Susanna Anas I'll explain some of the differences. Mapwarper.net is designed for individuals with a handful of maps. Basically the server (a dedicated server) has limited disk space, and its filling up, so it's not meant for institutions with really large collections. Users can upload maps, and stitch them together with other maps from other users. The maps can add quite a lot of metadata with the maps. The copyright of the maps is with the map and the user agrees that they are allowed to upload them. There's no easy way to batch upload maps. Wikimaps Warper http://warper.wmflabs.org/ uses Wikimedia Commons as the source of the maps. It's on the wikimedia labs infrastructure so disk space is much less of an issue. Users cant upload their own maps. Ground control points can be uploaded in batch form and per map, and downloaded per map. There is an embedded iD editor which talks to the OpenHistoricalMap.org API Whole wiki categories of maps can be imported at once. Only a category can be mosaiced together. Metadata is kept on Commons. To add a map to the warper, the map page in the wiki needs the Map template ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Map ). Then a button is shown on the page to add it to the warper (see examples on the project page) When the map has been warped in the wikimaps warper, the wiki page is edited to update the bounding box and the warped status. I think these maps have the Map template, but they may need the "warped" parameter added to them. Hi folks, so after a fix was applied to the Wikimaps Warper the collection of 581 maps from Wikimedia Commons was re-imported and added to a mosaic (layer) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:War%20Office%20Archive%20%E2%80%93%20British%20East%20Africa The mosaic: http://warper.wmflabs.org/layers/4 The Tiles link is http://warper.wmflabs.org/layers/tile/4/{z}/{x}/{y}.png and the WMS details can be found at http://warper.wmflabs.org/layers/4#Export_tab and of course individual maps have their own WMS and Tiles endpoints too Cheers, Tim p.s. Note that loading up a map for the first might take a once only period of a couple of minutes as the map gets requested from commons and is loaded up in the warper ... you should see a progress bar in that case! p.p.s. There's an issue with the warper not getting the correct thumbnail for some of the maps, but it shouldn't affect how it works in the warper. I tinkered with the "Kilimanjaro to Tsavo Stn. U.R.. WOOS-8-3-1" map a fair bit. Started by using recognisable locations (features on lakes, etc.) but eventually settled on tagging the grid lines and using online conversion tools to give me the WGS-84. The ones with hills in look great in Google Earth, e.g. http://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/629.kml Difficult to get the map spot on. Re: [Talk-GB] UK war office maps of Africa digitised
Tim, A lot of these maps won't rectify, even though I've completed all the control points. The one I've just come up with is http://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/261 - can someone try and preview it, or tell me what I'm doing wrong? Hi Richard, Are you still having issues? That map appears to be okay now, last rectified 3 days ago and was able to rectify it just now. I've a screenshot here: http://imgur.com/bOjMnWq http://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/261#Preview_tab Find me on IRC as chippy sometime if you are still encountering problems. regards, Tim On 9 February 2016 at 18:44, Richard Symonds wrote: > Tim, > > A lot of these maps won't rectify, even though I've completed all the > control points.
