Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] October meeting
Hello, For anyone cycling to the City Tavern for the meeting tomorrow, you can put your bikes in the back yard of the pub (the landlord has given permission for this). The access to the yard is through a door/gate at the side of the pub on Tennant Street. This door is kept locked (from the street, but not from the inside), so it will be necessary to ask me or ask at the bar for it to be opened (though it could perhaps be kept open for a couple of minutes around 7pm for people arriving at that time). Bikes can be chained to a ladder in the yard for additional security. Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] October meeting
I don't think there will be any problem with noise, as it's a fairly quiet pub and doesn't have loud music (except for events with music - of which there are none on Thursdays) or TVs etc and has two separate rooms, so if one is more noisy it is possible to go into the other one. I asked the landlord about bikes - he says he can accommodate up to about six in an area at the back of the pub where it would be safe for them to be locked up. For those travelling from the main part of the city centre, another option to walking or getting the train to Five Ways is to catch the bus - there are plenty going up Broad Street. The train to Five Ways is however also very frequent even in the evenings (about every 15 mins). Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] October meeting
The City Tavern sounds like a good pub but I think it is a bit far from New Street station. We need to do some research. I can't come this month, so have fun. -- Peter Millar - Original Message - From: "Brian Prangle" To: "Andy Robinson (blackadder-lists)" Cc: talk-gb-westmidlands@openstreetmap.org Sent: Wednesday, 23 September, 2009 18:52:23 GMT +00:00 GMT Britain, Ireland, Portugal Subject: Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] October meeting Agree on noise - I'm willing to try a new venue. What we've noted from experience is that it's important also that the place isn’t too noisy, otherwise it's too difficult to get a discussion going beyond a one to one. Also it needs to be safe for locked up bikes. Any comments on these two points? I'm happy to give it a try. The Queens arms is perfectly ok, just missing the wifi, which probably isn’t the end of the world when we consider the winter months are very much social orientated rather than mapping. Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] October meeting
Another possibility might be the City Tavern (on Bishopsgate Street, off Broad Street, near Five Ways - see http://osm.org/go/euzMC4Vpk-- for map). At the last meeting, I mentioned this pub but it seemed not to be suitable as I thought they didn't do food. I've since found out that they do a curry night on Thursdays between 5pm and 8pm (for £5), and they also allow people to bring in their own food. They do free Wi-fi (and no karaoke!) and it's a good traditional pub with a range of real ales (lagers and other drinks also available). I know the landlord of the pub, but would still highly recommend the pub if this were not the case. I don't know however whether curry (or brought in food) would suit everyone who wanted food however.
