It is better not to put the brackets in name as it messes up a search for
the name in nominatim. Carlow and Wexford were the first places where we
started adding townlands so may not have best practice.

eg "Ballynagran (ED Glenealy)" a seach for Ballynagran finds the
node and not the area:
http://nominatim.openstreetmap.ie/search.php?q=Ballynagran&viewbox=-16.23%2C56.11%2C2.23%2C50.72&polygon=1

Re adding a place node as well. Nominatim will also merge the place node
inside the area if both names and rank match so you dont get duplicates.
To be explicit, you can also add the place node with role "label" to the
area relation.

eg Bolagh Upper has the node as a linked place:
http://nominatim.openstreetmap.ie/details.php?place_id=844862

And a search for Bolagh Upper will only yield one result.

http://nominatim.openstreetmap.ie/search.php?q=Bolagh+Upper&viewbox=-16.23%2C56.11%2C2.23%2C50.72&polygon=1

2015-01-21 Thread Dave Foley
I'm easy on how the townlands should be named but really that should be under
the FAQ section. I didn't put the brackets in based on townlands in Wexford or
Carlow.
What about townlands with the same name beside each other, such as Sheenabeg
(Whaley and Robeck) - http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/52.8812/-6.3400 ? I
presume this should have the brackets included?

2015-01-21 Thread Donal Diamond
There's s a typo in OSM it should be Shee*a*nabeg

http://maps.openstreetmap.ie/oocmaps.html?zoom=16&lat=52.88088&lon=-6.34292&layers=BTTFFF

Looking at townland index - both are in Ballykine Civil parish, so their
names actual are name="Sheeanabeg (Whaley)"and name="Sheeanabeg
(Robeck)" . That's an odd one all right.

I think Dacor did mention the FOO (ED BAR) situation in his video. Can
you add the (ED) situation to wiki?

I've

http://www.townlands.ie/clare/drumellihy-westby/
http://www.townlands.ie/clare/drumellihy-westropp/

I presumed they used to be one townland and were then split donkey's
years ago. Sorta like all the "X West"/"X East" townlands.

2015-01-21 Thread Dave Foley
There's a few in Wicklow, Aghavanagh and Bahana being 2 examples.
Well spotted on the typo. I'm planning to compare the townlands with the
Wikipedia list at the end so I'll hopefully find all my typos then.
I did look at the videos but I don't remember everything that was mentioned and
it would still be handy to be able to refer to the FAQ at times rather than
trying to remember what video to look at. Just a suggestion anyway.
