That sounds like a simple typo. You should probably just change the
tag on OSM.
If it doesn't look like a typo, but you disagree with the tag, then
that's a more complicated matter. Wiki, mailing list, tag info, etc
are the way to research it.
Also, if I run a filter in QGIS: natural = 'water' AND water IS
NULL it returns 7574 rows, including major lakes such as Lough
Neagh, Gill, Conn etc. Does this mean that these are errors, i.e.
that the record is incomplete and the column 'water' hasn't been
filled in correctly? Or am I missing something here?
Nothing is wrong. OSM is an evolving project, and will never be
100% finished. Initially lakes were tagged with just natural=water.
Eventually we started using water=lake for more fine grained detail.
But not everything has been changed. Feel free to add the water=lake
tag to those lakes, if you'd like.
