[Talk-in] Use MapRoulette to improve OSM - India data

2017-03-15 Thread Srihari Thalla
Hi!

Since JOSM featured MapRoulette since a couple of days, there has been a
spike in MapRoulette usage:

   1. All Challenges metrics - http://maproulette.org/ui/metrics
   2. Self-intersecting multipolygon relations (India) -
   http://maproulette.org/ui/metrics/2380

I think we can use this time to add more Indian specific challenges and
thereby improve OSM-India data!

I'm thinking of these challenges:

   1. Reverse ways with oneway = -1 (except in rare cases where direction
of the way cannot be changed or for other reason) -
   http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/nvV
   2. Trace ___ in small towns and villages
  1. Roads
  2. Buildings
   3. Wikipedia and Wikidata tags for:
   1. Cities and towns - http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/nvT
  2. Railway Stations - http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/nvU
   4. Tag railway station `ref` codes
  1. http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/nvR
  2. Source - http://www.indianrail.gov.in/stn_Code.html
  5. Clean horse=yes tags on highways (except where horses are
specifically required like at hill stations) -
   http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/nvW
Question: Who set this tag for highways in the first place? Looks like
the tags are copied from Europe?
   6. Clean redundant motor_vehicle=yes tags on major highways (not
restricted expressways) (not where this tag is explicitly required) -
   http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/nvX

Thoughts? Ideas? Improvements?

Cheers,
Srihari

Re: [Talk-in] Use MapRoulette to improve OSM - India data

2017-03-16 Thread Srihari Thalla
I have set up these challenges as of today:

[1] - Railway Station codes
[2] - Wiki tags for railway stations
[3] - Wiki tags for cities and towns
[4] - Wiki tags for districts

-

@Naveen I hope all the NHs are already traced and mapped [and updated to
the new numbering]? I'll check if Overpass QL supports regex tomorrow and
set up the challenges. I might need your help.

-

Regarding tracing roads and building in small towns and villages, I noticed
that more 50% of the villages were not even mapped (at least in
Andhra/Telangana, I didn't look at other states). I think this procedure
might be good:

[a] - Place `node`s with place=village tags for untagged villages. We don't
know all the names, so we might want to leave the name for now.
[b] - Setup challenges to trace roads; and buildings
[c] - Work to get data about the villages (starting with their names
themselves)

I can start [a] with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
district-wise-alphabetically. If you are open to this idea, let me know and
your thoughts.

-

Here are the links for the Challenges [1,2,3,4]:

[1] - Railway Station codes - http://maproulette.org/map/2403
[2] - Wiki for Railway Stations - http://maproulette.org/map/2404
[3] - Wiki for cities and towns - http://maproulette.org/map/2405
[4] - Wiki for districts - http://maproulette.org/map/2406

cc Arun. Need your help spreading the word :)
-

I am in touch with Martijn of MapRoulette. He said he would feature our
challenges in the upcoming newsletter. I think the challenges above are
pretty easy and useful for getting people from other communities interested
in OSM, as Arun said.

But tracing untraced villages would be good for featuring in his
newsletter. That might bring attention. What do you think?

Re: [Talk-in] Use MapRoulette to improve OSM - India data

2017-03-23 Thread Srihari Thalla
I have added "place=village" nodes for villages in Krishna district (AP)
traced on Bing imagery [1] [2]. I have only traced some parts of the
district and the villages count grew to ~700 and probably doubles once I
sweep thru the entire district. It took a couple of hours for mapping them
(~350 in 2 changesets).

At this rate, it would take several days to just identify unmapped villages
and then map them and several weeks to trace roads to them!

Any ideas on how we can speed this up? As Arun said, we should do it in
sprints for this process to take off.

Thoughts and ideas...

Re: [Talk-in] Use MapRoulette to improve OSM - India data

2017-03-23 Thread Srihari Thalla
Hi, Deepak!

You have to zoom in a little bit. MapRoulette is trying to load the visible
map on the screen in JOSM.

For districts, as they are relations, zoom in on the boundary. This will
make sure that JOSM download contains the relation.
Before (MapRoulette says too much area) -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4gi6v65xzl9zxja/Screenshot%202017-03-24%2000.03.50.png?dl=0
After -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/w4hjq9lpstnkad3/Screenshot%202017-03-24%2000.04.22.png?dl=0

For cities and towns, as they are mostly nodes, zoom in on the node.
Screenshot -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/siivc2in9x70yhq/Screenshot%202017-03-24%2000.05.33.png?dl=0
If it still says too much area, just zoom in a little more!

Try these once again and let me know if it worked. If there are problems, I
will check with Martijn of MapRoulette!

Thanks for checking out challenges. Did you find them useful? Any
improvements to be done for them to make them even more efficient and
exciting?
Any other suggestions?

Cheers,
Srihari

[Talk-in] What is the convention to tag Banks and ATMs

2017-03-24 Thread Srihari Thalla
Hi! I have a couple of questions:

1. Should the abbreviated names of banks (SBI, SBH, PNB, ...) be tagged as
"brand" tag?

2. Regarding State Bank ATMs, what should be tagged under operator tag?
Should it be "State Bank" (I am not sure which SB group branch manages that
particular ATM!)

Re: [Talk-in] Use MapRoulette to improve OSM - India data

2017-03-29 Thread Srihari Thalla
Hi Deepak,

Thanks for your feedback! It's very useful.

1. I have made a post with detailed instructions for tagging districts. I
think it is a little easy to tag all the adjacent districts as they share
the same ways.
https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/maproulette/2017-March/000113.html

2. The official railway link for station codes seems to be down sometimes
and working sometimes. I found an IRFCA link to search for the station
codes. I have updated the link in MapRoulette too.
IRFCA - http://irfca.org/apps/station_codes

3. If no Wiki info if found, it's better to leave them and mark as "Too
difficult/Couldn't fix" in MapRoulette. We can investigate them once the
current Challenges are completed.

4. Stations in the middle of nowhere can be left as marked as "Too
difficult". We can check them later! You can find the train routes info at
http://indiarailinfo.com/

Re: [Talk-in] Use MapRoulette to improve OSM - India data

2017-03-29 Thread Srihari Thalla
I have completed identifying unmapped villages in Krishna. There are 1174
nodes and ways tagged with "place=village".

I have made a Challenge in MapRoulette to trace roads and connect these
villages with nearby highways. (We can trace houses later.)

I need help with tagging the roads. I made the instructions to tag
asphalt/good condition roads as "tertiary" and other non-asphalt roads as
"unclassified".
Since these roads connect villages with other major highways/town/other
villages, the tags tertiary/unclassified seemed optimal.

Identifying and tagging these unmapped villages took around 8 hours and
spread across a week!
At this rate, it might take several months for me to just tag Andhra
Pradesh and Telangana.

I would really need help from others speeding this up. If anyone's
interested, we can organise and work together.

Re: [Talk-in] Use MapRoulette to improve OSM - India data

2017-03-31 Thread Srihari Thalla
Thanks, Muzirian ;)

Can you help with mapping villages? You can start with your native
district. Here is what I did:

I picked up a district, Krishna, and made a total sweep and identified
villages that are not yet mapped. I placed a node with place=village tag. I
don't know the names of the villages, so I didn't put the name tag. I was
able to map 1000 villages.
Once it's completed, I have prepared the MapRoulette Challenge[1] to trace
roads in these villages and connect to the nearby highways.

Instead of the node[place=village], an area with landuse=residential can
also be made. But that is too tedious.

I don't know the names of the villages, but I hope we can tag them later,
probably using DataMeet data!

Do you have other thoughts?

Very happy to know that :)

I see that he has also updated NH wiki tags (but with errors, he is
correcting too). @Naveen Can you check if all the NHs are properly tagged
and complete with Wiki-pedia/data? Thanks.

He is also adding Wiki info for cities and towns now.

[Talk-in] Identifying usage of railway tracks

2017-04-06 Thread Srihari Thalla
As of this writing, there are 10052 Ways with railway=rail but without any
usage=* / service=* tags[1].

I have created a MapRoulette Challenge[2] with these Ways. I hope this
Challenge would get IRFCA fans interested[3]. (Who knows about railways
better than them? ;))

But, I have not filled in the instructions on how to complete the
Challenge. I don't think many IRFCA people know how to contribute to OSM,
so I believe a detailed instruction manual would be necessary (like this
[4]).

Can someone help me with preparing it?

Re: [Talk-in] Change of merged bank names in OpenStreetMap

2017-04-11 Thread Srihari Thalla
I have a couple of questions

1. Several Associate Banks are located in the same locality. Will they be
operated or be shut down?
2. Referring to the above, they tend to have the same "branch" name as in
"Chandanagar Branch". What about them?

Did SBI release any info about these issues? I remember reading some news
articles that some of the branches would be closed down.

If an automated script isn't preferred, one can download using the Overpass
query in JOSM (File > Download via Overpass) [1] and update accordingly.

We should do this once the name boards on the ground start changing,
otherwise this would cause confusion for those using the maps. Ganesh is
there a deadline by which all the branches should update their signboard?

I just noticed that several banks have translations in other languages too!
I guess we need to address them, maybe after this sprint of changes? An
automated script might be preferred as all these banks are just names the
same!

Re: [Talk-in] Change of merged bank names in OpenStreetMap

2017-05-27 Thread Srihari Thalla
Has there been a discussion about what would be the preferred tagging
scheme amenity=bank: node or an area? (I see some of the banks in the
spreadsheet are tagged as areas.)

Unlike places of worship, banks tend to be located in both dedicated
buildings (as in owned by the bank) or in a rented commercial space.

An area suits well with the dedicated scenario but a node is preferred for
rented ones!

Chetan,

I have left some of the entries in the spreadsheet which are ambiguously
named like 'SBI ATM' and such, but of course, are tagged with amenity=bank.
I am not sure if I can change them.

[Talk-in] Short names and brand:wikidata tags for Banks

2017-05-31 Thread Srihari Thalla
It is recommended to add short names and brand:wikidata tags for Banks.
Short names will enable Nominatim to search when short names are queried.
Additionally, website and wikipedia tags would be useful.

Here is a list of short names for banks I could think of. Please suggest
any others!

- BoB
- BoI
- HDFC
- ICICI
- IDBI
- IOB
- KVB
- OBC
- PNB
- RBL
- SBI

For reference, here is a list of banks in the country -

Re: [Talk-in] Short names and brand:wikidata tags for Banks

2017-06-10 Thread Srihari Thalla
Can RBI be tagged with amenity=bank? The wiki[1] says "A bank branch is a
financial establishment where customers can, among other services, deposit
and withdraw money, take loans, make investments and transfer funds." RBI
does not do them (does it?) rather controls the money policy and others.

BTW, here is the complete list of Banks in India:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banks_in_India
In a previous mail, the link I posted is just a category of it.

[Talk-in] Tagging service roads of National Highways

2017-08-19 Thread Srihari Thalla
Hi!

Some of the major National Highways (like Asian Highways[1]) have service
roads running in parallel. What is the standard tagging of these roads?

I have tagged them as "trunk_link" [2] but I am not sure if this is the one
followed by others.

[Talk-in] old_name tag for merged Associate State Banks

2017-10-13 Thread Srihari Thalla
Hi,

Back in May 2017, we have updated the name tags of merged Associate State
Banks from their old names (State Bank of xxx) to the new name, "State Bank
of India".

We have identified and tracked the entries in a spreadsheet [1]. I have
updated many entries.
However, I forgot to add the old_name tag with the old name (State Bank of
xxx) and just updated the name tag to State Bank of India.

I think it is good to have the old names in the old_name tag as people
might still remember the banks with their old names.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Srihari

Re: [Talk-in] old_name tag for merged Associate State Banks

2017-10-13 Thread Srihari Thalla
Chetan, Is there any possibility to update them via script?

I am not sure if Overpass API can download based on changes in changesets.
If not, manually going through the spreadsheet would be the obvious choice.

It would be better to write a script to query the histories of Bank amenity
objects
and import them into JOSM and update.

Scripting would, of course, need approval from the community!

Here are my changesets: OSMCha: https://goo.gl/V76HoH

I bundled all the changes into two changesets. (There are 5 other singled
out changesets too.)

Manually :: Downloading the changeset -> going through each object history
-> updating each object

What do you say would be a good idea?

Re: [Talk-in] Need all the district details of India

2018-10-05 Thread Srihari Thalla
Hi Thej,

Here is the query : http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/Cxv

This is what I did :
1. Open the Wizard tool
2. type:relation and admin_level=5 and name:kn=* in India
3. Hit Build and run. If you encounter timeout, increase the same in the
generated query.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Srihari
