The GPS traces are very raw data. They are just a collection of
points, and usually, a large collection of points. To create OSM
information (such as road structure) one needs to see these raw traces
in a larger context.

You can use an aerial photography source as a reference to get this
larger context. The trouble with that in India, however, is that the
legally viable sources like Yahoo Maps, are not detailed enough for
this region

You could use OSM data itself as a reference.. but if your area has
not been previously covered, you are in a chicken and egg situation.
You will need to start with some assumptions and then build over it.

Atleast, that is what I am doing. Experts, please correct me if I am mistaken.

cheers,

In other words, GPS traces are useful for marking obvious things like
roads?

What's the best thing that I should be doing, from the viewpoint of
openstreetmap?

I live in Bombay and work in Delhi and do GPSing in both regions.

Sure, would be happy to. Is a mapping party 2-3 hours? Then many
workday evenings work for me.

No, except that satellite maps in India, which one can use
to mark roads, etc., are often not of the best quality.

As you wish. One monolithic file for an entire route is probably
more common. Waypoints can be translated into OSM locations.

You are based in Delhi, right? Maybe it is time for another
mapping party here. It is easier to share data, and instructions
with a bunch of people. Can people follow up here if there is
interest in a Delhi mapping party in the next couple of weeks.

[Talk-in] How do I get started?

2009-08-02 Thread Ajay Shah
Folks,

I'm able to use a Garmin GPS to make .gpx files of routes that I'm
on. Is there a set of instructions through which I can get started on
submitting them to openstreetmap? Are there any peculiarities about
India which matter to this?

Does one submit one separate .gpx file for each street or one just
submits one big .gpx file for a full route that one has been on? What
about waypoints?
