We did a trial mapping of trees on an instance of opentreemap at
http://trees.metastudio.org/mumbai yesterday. We mapped about 50 trees, and
will be doing many more during this month.

the Procedure that we followed, one hour of field on the street with
fieldpapers
to mark the positions of the trees, and then we returned to the lab and mapped
the trees with name and address.

Will update the documentation on the site and will be keeping the site ready
for the use of several volunteers who will join from 13th onwards.

In Bangalore, some of us coordinate an annual tree festival called Neralu
(meaning shade in kannada). There have been several efforts in Bangalore on
mapping avenue trees and it would be nice if the same platform is extended
to other cities as well.

More details about Neralu here: http://neralu.in

Arun... I had already set up a tile service a long time back if you

 It's broken now though.
Would be happy to get things running full throttle again. :)

Yes!

Also, to make things easier, we could just reuse the osm rails port:

Hi GN, this is awesome, can you share more details on the project and how

yes. give me a week, the website is getting ready. We will be starting this
project with a question to investigate. The question is to know the serial
killer of rain treen in Mumbai. About 400 trees died in the last 3-4 years.
So, initially we will be mapping all the rain trees in the city and its
suburbs. We will have about a hundred volunteers and we expect to finish rain
tree mapping by the end of January. And the investigation will continue.

   1. when we add a tree, we also add its name etc. however, this

  information

does not appear. The tree dot is visible but does not have any info.

  One has

to go to edit interface to check the information added. How to go about

  this?

We'll need to make a custom rendering style for this. Nobody seems to have
 looked into this yet.

This is not a show stopper now, but eventually it will be good to have the
information. I will not focus on this issue at all. This is just to say,
what do we need in OSM.

   2. under the type of trees, we would like to add some more types. is

  this

possible? how to go about doing this?

Looks like this list can be expanded in the iD editor code:
 https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/blob/master/data/presets/fields/tree_typ
 e.json

You can see the list of commonly used tree tags at
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:natural%3Dtree which could be
 helpful for the mappers.

I looked at this. We need to record some additional type of information.
e.g. if there is any pest found on the tree. name of the pest: This is
important for us since the rain trees are dying because of a pest called meal
worm. The other thing is to note if the tree is situated at a cemented land
or open land.

If one of you can help getting this extra information, or tell us how to
pursue this with OSM, that will be good. Or else, if you guys can setup a
separate server for this, that is always the best.

btw, what happened to the idea of setting up of a osm.in?

It is actually possible to view the full metadata of objects by using the
query feature tool on osm.org (The question mark on the right side of the
map) http://www.openstreetmap.org/query?lat=19.04236lon=72.92798

There is nothing that stops us from defining our own key/value pair for
this purpose and using it. Example:
disease:meal_worm
disease:fungus
foundation:concrete
foundation:dirt

To add such custom tags to objects, once you select an object in the
editor, you will see the tag dictionary on the bottom of the left pane.

I have added such a tag to a tree as an example:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/2568585l018

Tree species or other detailed data are somewhat a niche bit of
information for what started off as road mapping software. Hence the
standard renderer does not show it, as it also does not show a lot of the
other info added, for instance population of towns, et.c. A specialised
renderer would need to be created to display such data. Maybe this can be
done using a stylesheet with some of the existing render software.

For editing purposes, as you can see at
http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Styles there is a stylesheet for JOSM
that will display the spread of the tree, and I imagine it can also be
modified to show the name, species or other information. (It might be of
interest to read this contribution by the writer of that stylesheet -
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/AndrewBuck/diary/17551)

I'm not sure what you mean by type? There is no tag shown under this name
at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:natural%3Dtree . Trees would
ideally be shown by their botanic name (genus and species, or taxon), at
least the genus part of it. And these should be botanically correct, e.g.
genus=Cocos. If it is not known, then the 'name' tag could be used with a
common name, e.g. name=coconut.

There is OpenTreeMap (OTM) which is an app that does the same. . I think
the data can be ported back to osm. I had set up an OTM instance a while
back. I did not check the import to OSM though.
