Re: [talk-ph] [waypointsdotph] Re: Tropical Storm Ondoy: are you guys ok?

2009-09-28 Thread Eugene Alvin Villar
Hi maning,

Thank God you and your family are safe. We were worried when nobody could
contact you.

As for mapping for disaster, I don't know yet what we can do. Unlike in Gaza
for which maps are not available, Marikina is well-mapped. I guess what's
missing are geological and engineering information which can map where
flooding is common and where flooding is likely in cases of extreme
rainfall. (The US has flood maps but they are having trouble keeping them
up-to-date as evidenced by Katrina due to the fast pace of development.)
Maybe this can be a long-term objective.

For the meantime, we should focus on rescue and relief operations.

Hi,

We're OK. Other's are not so lucky but our family and immediate
relatives are safe. The water was so fast you don't have time to
panic. Thankfully the whole family was safe.

I went around just this morning to look at the extent of the damage.
I went to Ed's house (indescribable). Provident village was was the
worst.

@ Ed, if ever you need help in rebuilding the house. Just tell me.
An extra hand would always help.

As mapping project for the Philippines, I believe we need to respond
to crisis like this one. I don't have anything in mind at the moment,
but just the same, we need to do something.

To the main OSM talk, here's the reference to the storm:

Yes.  Our house got fully submerged (roof included) in very muddy flood
waters.  The waters rose to record high compared to the 3 floods of 1979,
 1989 and 1999.  Yes, I experienced all 4 floods so far ... Remarkably ,
the major floods come every 10 years and about this time of the year
always.  This is the worst, damaging everything we had, burying most items

Yes, we moved into our neighbors 2-storey house (roof actually) and slept
on the roof the whole night through without getting any rescue as the
rescue operations were simply overwhelmed with the magnitude of the flood
and the number of flood victims.  There were a lot of fatalities, mostly
from being trapped in their rooms as the flood rose so fast.

We all safely survived the flood.  Praise God!

 We deeply appreciate your concern.

p.s. my wife was not at home at that time so she was spared from the flood
 as well.  Praise God again.

[talk-ph] Fwd: [waypointsdotph] Red Cross Needs your help

2009-09-28 Thread Ed Garcia
message sent to waypointsdotph ... forwarding it to you guys as maybe even
if you can not get the coordinates via GPS, if you know of such evacuation
centers, maybe you can approximate the coordinates from maps or from our own
OSM data.

Hi guys! I'm Louie Galvez and I'm one of the Directors of the Red Cross
Rizal Chapter. We are in need of the waypoints of Evacuation centers. If
you have one, please text the info to 0917-555 5574. Pls do not email since
I won't be able to check my email. Pls text: 1) Your name, 2) Name of
Evacuation Site, 3) Coordinates (in h.d format pls), 4) If possible
number of families affected 5) and if they already received any assistance
in the area.

A Mapsource file will just be as good.

Thanks

Louie

[talk-ph] To save the electronic items.

2009-09-28 Thread Michael Cole
First thing is if you cannot do anything with them straight away place into a
bucket of clean water and leave there. The cleaner the better.

Next is to dry them off. If you can safely remove the case do so and let drain.

If you can get alcohol pour over the device, It can damage some plastics so be
careful.

This will wash away excess dirt and residue but will not be completely perfect
yet.

Dry and shake then place into a bag with Silica Gel (the stuff in the little
bags "do not eat" you get with vitamins and shoes.).

This will remove moisture from the bag ,therefore the device will be dried
slowly.

Power the device up after 2 or 3 days in bag, depending on the size of the
device and the amount of water you think was left in it after the shaking dry.

Do Not heat the devices, LCD's and other components don't like to get hot.

I dunked My phone on Saturday walking in the floods and 24 Hours of bag and
Silica Gel Worked wonders.

You can buy it at good Photo stores, there are other gels but im not sure how
good they are. I Have two large bags of silica gel the size of two fists each,
and they worked perfectly.

Taking Photos in the Rain put Camera in plastic Bag and Gel in Bag, it should
remove any water, or mist from the inside of the bag.

This is what I have normally done for all the items I have sunk in the past..

So it may or may not work 100% of the time..
