Re: [talk-ph] Intramuros Mapping Party: meeting places

2010-12-12 Thread maning sambale
We had the afternoon meet-up in Museong Pambata c/o Maricel Montero.

Inside the Old Manila exhibit room was a large map showing the route
of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade [1]. The map shows that the
first entry point to the Philippines is a small island between Samar
and Luzon island. This island is called Capul Island [2].

Some trivia why I am very much interested in this island:
1. The native language is not of Visayan roots but that of a distinct
Abaknon (Inabaknon) related to the language family Sama-Bajaw dominant
in Sulu archipelago and the coast of Borneo. [3] A map of Philippine
languages is here [4]. According to local legend: "Capul Island was
originally founded by King Abak who escaped from Java with his tribe
before the onslaught of Islam" [5]
2. The geographic location of the island is an ideal
amenity=galleon_stop to the long route=ferry name=Manila-Acapulco
Galleon Trade Route, before proceeding to Manila because of the small
size of the island and the expansive view of the horizon.
"Wide-angle" view of the horizon is very important for the Galleon
traders in order to spot potential pirate attacks.
3. Much of what we know as Filipino food (plants, fruits or
vegetables) came from the trade and commerce within this
Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade [6]. Big thanks to the Capul Island
dwellers who "helped" secure a safe travel to the galleon traders.

Free beers from me to anyone who will be able to visit and map this island. :)

Great job Totor! Your effort to document the process is most
commendable. This will be very useful as I have my own plans of
collecting my DIY imagery in the future.
One thing I noticed is that your TMS aligned better with Google
imagery than that of Bing

[talk-ph] Bing or own aerial pictures...

2010-12-12 Thread Totor
Hi all,

Just a quick note on the imagery.
I still have problems stitching them with Hugin.
More details here : http://osm.totor.ph/

I was able to align part of the pictures further, using
QGIS. Still not good enough in my opinion, but I won't have time to continue
the experiment for the moment.
Altough not good for editing, I uploaded the resulting imagery for viewing here
:
http://osm.totor.ph/SM-Cebu/

Selecting the "My TMS" main layer allows to zoom to 21!

Regards,

Totor

[talk-ph] JOSM editing tip

2010-12-12 Thread Jim Morgan
Came across this on someone's blog - something I didn't know how to do in JOSM
before. It always used to irritate me if ways were joined together, but this
will definitely make editing them easier.

Jim
---

"I think the problem is that although it is easy to create a way onto of
another, nobody knows how to edit them. If you click the line it will only
select one of the ways. Using JOSM, if you middle click the line(or left &
right click on laptops) a box will appear along side describing each way.
Before releasing the mouse button, hold down the Control key to keep that box
there (you can now release the mouse button) and while the control key is still
pressed you can go and click the description of the way you want. Let go of
everything and the way you want should be selected for whatever editing you
wish to do. Sounds complicated doesn’t it, but once you’ve done it it’s easy
enough to do again."
