Re: [talk-ph] OSM contributions - some basics for a newby

2017-11-27 Thread Erwin Olario
Hi Glen. Thank you for your edits. We're happy to have you.

Google's StreetView, unfortunately, shares a similar restriction to its Map
service, and also not a valid source of information. I recently [0] had to
redact data that was added from the map, that used this source for their
edits.

MapCentral, and any other copyright restricted sources, cannot also be
used. Either you collection this information yourself (an excellent
opportunity to stretch the legs, and get to know the neighborhood better),
or convince the data owners to re-publish this data on OSM.

In lieu of StreetView, you might like to try out Mapillary[1] or
OpenStreetCam [2] to capture street-level imagery yourself.

/Erwin

[talk-ph] OSM contributions - some basics for a newby

2017-11-27 Thread Glen Scott
Hi,

I'm making some contributions to NW Pangasinan (I'm from Australia, my wife
is from Alaminos) and would like to discuss some "rules" and seek some
advice...

I think I may have already broken one rule re road tagging, but not using
the tag "service road" since that has a different use here. But having
found the Philippines conventions page I promise to fix those indiscretions
in time...

One question is around legitimate information sources - I understand Google
Maps can't be used - but can street view be used (great for seeing the name
of auditoriums etc.)?

Can Mapcentral be used for Barangay names and borders or is there a better
source? I see the Mapcentral borders differ considerably to the Google
Maps borders.

I've sent one email to Alaminos City town hall re street names - no
response to date but will give them a call of I don't hear from them over
the next week. Any other sources of street names? Post office? I'll be
there next March and can always ask people on the street, though some of
the streets in new sub-divisions don't appear to have houses yet

Regards

[talk-ph] UP RI-NOAH uses OSM for building UP Resilient Campuses

2017-11-27 Thread Feye Andal
Good day!

The UP Resilience Institute (UP RI) was
formed to scale up and transform the previous multidisciplinary initiatives
in DRRM by UP and its national and regional partners into interdisciplinary
or transdisciplinary research or creative work, extension service, and
training, both for added capacity building within UP and capacity building
within the larger society. The UP NOAH Center
, as a core component of the UP RI, was
established in the University of the Philippines to conduct research,
development and extension services on natural hazards, disaster risk
reduction and climate change actions. The core of UP NOAH’s work is
producing freely accessible, accurate, reliable, and relevant scientific
disaster data.

The UP Resilient Campuses Project by the UP RI aims to create disaster
management contingency plans to address the UP campuses’ vulnerability to
natural hazards. It intends to take off from previous and existing plans
and improve them by using the latest technology and the best methodologies
to develop better strategies specific to the higher education units of the
University of the Philippines campuses. This new and improved plan will
cover the entire scope disaster risk management, from the identification of
the risks all the way to recovering from disasters. It also aims to develop
strategies to become resilient against the adverse impacts of geological
and climate related natural hazards.

With this in mind, we would like to ask for assistance from
OpenStreetMap-Philippines to map the various communities in the various UP
campuses using OpenStreetMap (OSM). As such, it is helpful in identifying
points of interest, critical facilities (e.g. health centers, schools, town
halls), buildings, and other infrastructures in the community that help
identify areas vulnerable to disasters using risk and exposure details
(number of affected houses, commercial buildings, evacuation centers).

The task numbers are as follows:

UP Diliman 3436

UP Manila School of Health Sciences, Aurora 3794

UP Diliman Extension Program in Pampanga 3434

UP Baguio 3435

UP Bonifacio Global City 3437

UP Manila 3438

UP Los Baños 3457

UP Open University – Headquarters 3790

UP Visayas, Miag-ao 3470

UP Visayas, Iloilo City 3460

UP Cebu 3461

UP Cebu South Road Properties (Professional Schools) 3469

UP Visayas, Tacloban College 3471

UP Manila School of Health Sciences, Leyte 3472

UP Mindanao 3791

UP Manila School of Health Sciences, South Cotabato 3792

UP Alabang 3793

We would also be happy to provide training to those who are willing to help
in this effort to achieve this goal of disaster-resilient UP campuses.

Please e-mail us if you have any other questions regarding the project.
Thank you.

Sincerely,

*Dinnah Feye H. Andal*

[talk-ph] spare us a few minutes for (a little more) mapping

2017-11-27 Thread Erwin Olario
Hi folks.

After our little geoweek celebration [0] last week, I was approached by an
enthusiastic participant who expressed a sincere interest to map their
hometown.

To start them off, I made a low-priority task in a Tasking Manager [1] ,
where feedback can be made about their edits, and the particular job. The
plan is eventually to cover more ground, but for now, the task scope is
limited to the town center.

With very limited time for interaction, I can only introduce the rudiments
of iD editing. I pointed out the available resources online for self-paced
learning, and the various channels they could use to reach out to fellow
mappers, - but also made sure that they could still reach out to me
personally.

My intention in this outreach, is to mentor them remotely, but made the
caveat that they can not expect me to spoon-feed them.

Show some <3, and polish off a grid, or two, or leave feedback about the
edits. They're pretty small, and it would be encouraging for them to know
that there's actually a supportive community behind their effort.

Thanks!

/Erwin

P.S.
This isn't a "directed editing" effort. ;)
