[talk-ph] Be careful in tracing from Bing Maps

2011-01-05 Thread Eugene Alvin Villar
Hi guys,

Please be careful in tracing from Bing Maps aerial imagery. It is
known that some of the imagery is not aligned to the correct position.
To show an example, please see this Bing maps screenshot: [1]. The
image shows the boundary between two satellite imagery. The imagery on
the top covers Metro Manila is is for the most part correctly
positioned. The imagery at the bottom covers parts of Cavite, Laguna,
Batangas, and Rizal[3] and is *not* positioned correctly. Notice that
the residential streets do not line up.

In order to avoid the misaligned imagery problem that has been
plaguing contributors in Google Map Maker, please try to align the
imagery to GPS tracks or known good data before tracing.

In Potlatch 2 and Merkaartor 0.17, the imagery can be moved by
pressing down the spacebar then dragging. I don't know how to do this
in JOSM but it also has a way to move the background image.

Here's an example of aligning Bing Maps imagery.

This first image shows the default view of Bing Maps in Potlatch 2 and
with GPS traces loaded (the yellow arrows show the offset needed to
align the imagery):
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Bing_not_yet_aligned_in_GMA,_Cavite.jpg

This next image shows the Bing Maps layer moved to provide a best fit
alignment with the GPS traces:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Bing_now_aligned_in_GMA,_Cavite.jpg

This last image shows streets traced from Bing Maps now that it is aligned:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Bing_now_aligned_and_traced_in_GMA,_Cavite.jpg

Tips: When trying to align the image, look over a larger area where
GPS traces are available and do a best fit over that area. In
addition, the best spots to inspect for alignments are intersections
and curves in the roads.

the one i'm using on windows: JOSM (version 3767)

While Bing Imagery & GPS traces are shown on the JOSM's background:
click on menu: Imagery --> New offset

then a new window will pop-up "Adjust imagery offset" (with Easting /
Northing correction & Bookmark name)
while this pop-up is showing,
-use mouse "left-button" to drag, align/correct offset of Bing Imagery
-use mouse "right-button" to pan & drag the entire workspace,
to check & verify if your "offset correction" is the best-fit for the
particular area.
re-adjust (using left-button) as necessary. once you are happy with the offset,
you may want to bookmark that particular offset settings for that
particular place
on JOSM by saving it under a "bookmark name" --

To access the particular bookmarked "offset/correction", click
Imagery->New offset

to delete/manage Offset bookmarks: press F12 ---> WMS/TMS button -->
Offset bookmarks (tab)

Brilliant. I didn't know you could do this in Potlatch. Had a quick look around
JOSM and it doesn't immediately seem possible.

Re: [talk-ph] Be careful in tracing from Bing Maps

2011-01-05 Thread Rally de Leon
Hi Jim,
It is possible to do this on the "latest" JOSM. I was also surprised
(and very happy) to discover this powerful new feature on JOSM.
Because I used to manually enter 'numeric values' for offset
corrections (Northings/Eastings), and It's a long trial & error
process to get the best-fit; now it's just click & drag. very nice.

And the other thing I love (on josm) is that you can 'bookmark' a lot
of these offset values per working area. Note: (from experience), the
offset correction is normally good only within 300-500 meter radius
(from the center of your good reference area); after which, the
imagery tends to shift slightly. Thus, to maintain good & tight
alignments between uploaded gps traces & osm data, you have to
recalibrate (offset) every half kilometer or so... in which case,
bookmarking offsets can make your life a lot easier. :-)

Don't seem to have that menu anywhere. I'm using the latest JOSM on Linux.
Maybe the menu item is added with one of your plugins? What plugins are you
running?

JOSM Version 3767 (on Windows) looks like this:

No need for extra plug-in (it's built-in):

Indeed. Got it now. They must have sneaked that in in the last week or two!
Good stuff.

Re: [talk-ph] Be careful in tracing from Bing Maps

2011-01-12 Thread maning sambale
I checked the existing coverage of gps traces within bing areas. Aside
from Jolo and Sanga-sanga all of them have GPS tracks we can calibrate
the imagery. See josm shots here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/esambale/sets/72157625812711648/with/5350890259/

A few observations while eye-balling the images:
- Cavite, Laguna, Batangas area have extensive traces, I think it is
sufficient for calibration/adjustment
- same goes for Iloilo and Cebu
- Puerto princesa has good coverage on some grid like streets,
however, I'm not sure if these are multiple traces. Is there a Palawan
mapper here?
- very few traces in Tacloban but there is a grid-like trace in
Tanauan (center of the image)
- Cagayan de Oro has very few traces. I added my personal trace (using
2 separate GPS units) along the trunk road. So far, it lined up
pretty well.
- Puerto galera's major roads are traced, however, the roads are too
curvy. Unless it is a multiple trace I don't think we should
calibrate the image.
- For all other areas, the traces are very few.

@ Rally, is there a way to share the offset bookmark in JOSM? I
suspect this is just a config line within the .preferences file of
JOSM. It would be good if we can share the bookmark to other josmers.
