Re: [Talk-TW] Working together in improving Taiwan roads

2016-11-07 Thread maning sambale
Hi,

Final update on this realignment effort.

We completed the realignment project by validating 42 TM projects
covering (~70%) of mainland Taiwan.
See srividya's diary here:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/srividya_c/diary/39839

Along with this, we also updated the offset database for areas we
encountered that Bing imagery has an offset, see:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/BharataHS/diary/39752

One more cleanup task is needed which is the overlap of buildings and
roads this is available as a tofix task for the community:
http://osmlab.github.io/to-fix/#/task/crossinghighwaysandbuildings

We will work on this in the coming weeks but the majority of
realigning effort is done.

In behalf of the Mapbox data team, we would like to thank the TW
community for supporting this project.
We are looking forward for more collaboration in the future. Thank again!

2016-09-21 Thread maning sambale
Hi,

Related to our previous email and diary, we have been realigning roads
for several areas in Taiwan. Last week, we have modified 2,500 km of
roads. Here's a map:

https://api.mapbox.com/styles/v1/maning/cisit2qu700392wnv88ytg6bs.html?fresh=true=true_token=pk.eyJ1IjoibWFuaW5nIiwiYSI6IlhjWGNfdTQifQ.ras0nImWG638BCDSxU8bqw#6.78/23.750/121.673

You may have seen some of our edits around your neighbourhood. If you
notice any issues don't hesitate to comment on any of our changesets.
Some of you did already [0 & 1], thank you very much!

After last week's trial run, we are going to continue our realigning
by focusing on areas that has updated imagery from Mapbox Satellite.
We invite everyone to join.
We coordinate using github: https://github.com/mapbox/mapping/issues/233

cheers,

Hello everyone,

As discussed earlier by Maning [0], we reviewed alignment of current
OpenStreetMap data and imagery available for tracing with Strava GPS
traces. I posted my observations in my diary [1]. As a result of our
review, our satellite team at Mapbox updated our imagery for several cities
in Taiwan [2]. All our Mapbox Satellite imagery is open for tracing in
OpenStreetMap. We hope the community will find this useful in improving
the data. This is just a start and we are excited to work together with
the TW-OSM community.

Thank you for your warm welcome. My replies inline.

@Dennis

> QA tool to fix small errors in Taiwan some times ago.

Yes, we do global fixing of common errors using to-fix. We welcome
feedback if you notice any issues with our edits.

> I'm curious about how will Mapbox do to improve the data quality, especially
> to enhance the navigation part. And
what the local community can do to help?

Making OSM navigable is our main goal. By navigation, we mean
navigation for car. Data such as:
- roads and names
- oneways
- traffic signals
- turn restrictions (including conditional turn restrictions)
- turn lanes (including bike lanes)
- speed limits
- exit signs and destinations for motorways

We have worked with the OSM community in several countries such as US
[0], Canada [1] and Germany [2] and we plan to do the same for other
countries. While looking at the data in Taiwan, we noticed there were
misaligned roads [3], so before we add navigation specific data, its
important to first improve road geometry.

We will probably work on a per city basis. Do you have any suggestion
of which city we should do first?
We are still continuing our research before we start mapping. We
will definitely share the outcomes here.

We normally use the Tasking Manager to coordinate mapping, if the
community use other tools,
let us know so we can work together.

@rex,

> we use Facebook[0], trello[1], slack[2] for communication

I just joined slack.

This is amazing! I loaded the wtms in JOSM and the alignment from
STRAVA is really good [4]!
I assume the license to trace in OSM is OK?
We will use this as a reference for aligning instead of the really old Bing.

Re: [Talk-TW] Working together in improving Taiwan roads

2016-09-08 Thread Rex Tsai
Hi, Maning and friends from mapbox

Welcome and thanks for helping out improve the data for Taiwan community.

We have some tools for collaboration in local communities, we use
Facebook[0], trello[1], slack[2] for communication. And hackpad[3] for
documentation. Basically, all the tools are open to everyone, any
communities members can join the any of the services. They can file
task and call for help on trello, and file proposals and ideas on
hackpad. And we will generate monthly summary reports[6] before the
Taipei meetup, to let the community know what has bee done and what's
next.

You are more than welcome to join us[4][5]. If you are old school, we
are also in #osm-tw channel on OFTC[7] (which bridged to slack #random
channel). Most of the documents are in Chinese, please ask if you have
any problem.

We also have a few tasks on improving data quality. One of approach is
Map's Watch team[8]. Basically, we use some scripts to forward the
changes of new mappers and notes to slack channel, and the team
members can triage in the slack. We also have some QA tool planning in
trello backlog[9][10], but don't have much bandwidth to implement them
yet.

You are more than welcome to contribute your views and investigations
on Taiwan's road data. Feel free to use any tools I mentioned to work
with local communities. As local communities, we can help on
explaining Road tagging system in Taiwan[11], and use the open data
map imagery from Taiwan government as a reference.

Coping @kcwu, who help to build some infrastructure tools for Taiwan community.
