[Talk-us] Help switching WeatherSpark to OSM

2012-11-07 Thread Clifford Snow
If you haven't used Weather Spark, www.weatherspark.com, give it a try.
They offer really great graphics and data for your current weather. However
they use google for their base maps. I've submitted a feature request to
get them to switch to OSM.

Please go to http://weatherspark.uservoice.com/forums/88675-general, search
on OpenStreetMap and vote for my suggestion. Help me move get their
attention.

Thanks,
Clifford

Instead of writing things multiple times in multiple places on the wiki
(with some pages up to date, others not) I just linked to the TIGER Fixup
page on the OPC wiki page.
The TIGER fixup page was relatively outdated, imho, but I began to address
some of the suggestions (For OPC) that have been expressed in this
discussion.

Keep in mind that SOTM has traditionally been held in early or mid-July.

The reason for it being September this year and last is to coincide with
FOSS4G in Denver and the one that ended up not happening this year in
Beijing. No idea if the September scheduling will continue, it will go
back to being in July or something else.

But it means June might not be the best time for SOTM US, if SOTM is in
July.

Re: [Talk-us] [OPC2012] Operation Cowboy - Mission statement

2012-11-07 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi,

I think it would be good if we can put together a (wiki) page with
resources for armchair TIGER mappers.

Take a TIGER ghost town (I will commit to making a list of those) like
this one here:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.52791&lon=-111.58147&zoom=16&layers=M

and think: what could anyone do to improve the situation here?

* Straightening roads
* Adding traffic signals if there are any [1]
* Positioning GNIS imported POIs
* Adding building outlines for important buildings (most every town
has a school, a church or two)
* Look around the town for weird TIGER ways that don't align with
satellite imagery (usually tracks / unpaved) - reclass and align

There has to be more. Suggestions?

Who can put this together and link to it from the Operation Cowboy page? [2]

Re: [Talk-us] SOTM-US 2013

2012-11-07 Thread Martijn van Exel
We are likely going to have to expedite the venue / city selection
process if we want to make the conference happen in Q2 of next year,
so I would suggest to anyone who has a proposal for a location for
SOTM US 2013 to be prepared to move quickly and proactively so we can
determine viability very soon (I would say no later than end of
November, haven't yet coordinated a firm date though). So please get
in touch with Alex, Bonnie or me (through this list is fine if you
prefer) with your ideas for city, venue and local organizing team. Use
the 2012 bid criteria
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/State_Of_The_Map_U.S._2012/BIDS/CRITERIA
as a guideline, but as we will have to move fast, it's really
important that we can hit the ground running with local organization.

Note that this is going to be the exception rather than the rule. We
are aiming to have a full-length bidding process next year again, and
the years after. The rush is only because we want to align better with
SOTM international.
