[Talk-us] Feature proposal: proposed expanded address tagging scheme for US

2012-11-17 Thread Steven Johnson
Hi all,
Following up on an action from SotM-PDX, I've posted a proposal for
expanded tagging for addresses, primarily in the US (though it may have
application in other countries). The intent of the tags is to 1) improve
the description of US addresses, and 2) provide greater flexibility for
local mappers. These tags are necessary because unlike other countries, the
US has no nationwide house numbering/street naming standard. These tags
provide more granularity for local mappers and hopefully, will reduce much
of the ambiguity and confusion with addresses in localities with widely
varying address schemes.

I invite your comments and discussion on the proposed tags. Thanks.

[Talk-us] Fwd: Re: Ghost suburbs

2012-11-17 Thread Charlotte Wolter

Richard,

All good advice, some of which I can't do because I'm
nowhere near El Paso. It looks like there's no impediment to driving
on the "roads," if anyone would want to. Where they empty onto a
paved road, there are some smears of dirt, so someone is using them.
And there don't seems to be fences or gates.
It is interesting that some actually have names. I wonder
what the city or county government would have to say about this.
Might be worth a call (by me).
Do we have anyone in the El Paso area who might have a
ground view of this?

if they didn't exist, the highway=proposed would be ok.
but since they exist, i'd go with highway=track
if they never got signs, i'd remove the names, or change the tag to

from the maproulette vantage point.

[Talk-us] Whole-US Garmin Map update - 2012-11-15

2012-11-17 Thread Dave Hansen
These are based off of Lambertus's work here:

If you have questions or comments about these maps, please feel
free to ask. However, please do not send me private mail. The
odds are, someone else will have the same questions, and by

FAQ

Why did you do this?

I wrote scripts to joined them myself to lessen the impact
of doing a large join on Lambertus's server. I've also
cut them in large longitude swaths that should fit conveniently
on removable media.

http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2012-11-15

Can or should I seed the torrents?

Yes!! If you use the .torrent files, please seed. That web
server is in the UK, and it helps to have some peers on this
side of the Atlantic.

Why is my map missing small rectangular areas?

There have been some missing tiles from Lambertus's map (the
red rectangles), I don't see any at the moment, so you may
want to update if you had issues with the last set.

Why can I not copy the large files to my new SD card?

If you buy a new card (especially SDHC), some are FAT16 from
the factory. I had to reformat it to let me create a >2GB
file.

Does your map cover Mexico/Canada?

Yes!! I have, for the purposes of this map, annexed Ontario
in to the USA. Some areas of North America that are close
to the US also just happen to get pulled in to these maps.
This might not happen forever, and if you would like your
non-US area to get included, let me know.

My preference has been

highway=proposed
proposed=residential

for ghost subdivisions around Chicago.
