Chances are very good that they are leftovers from an edit that
someone made who chose not to agree to the new license. Their edits
had to be deleted, but if someone else moved the node, the node was
left in place even though the way had to be deleted.

You can either delete them, or if they correspond to a feature, use
them to create the feature.

Is there ever any benefit in a standalone node with no tags, especially
if it doesn’t appear to be in an “interesting” location relative to
underlying imagery?

There are 2 common reasons for this:

1 - an import with a partial failed upload that hasn't been cleaned
up. Most of the early orphan nodes have been mechanically removed.

2 - The license change redaction process may have left these nodes
when the attached way was redacted.

If the standalone nodes are recent, don't delete them for at least 2
weeks in case an approved import is in process and will resume later and
need to use those nodes. Also be sure they are not contained in a
relation (I'm not sure how clearly all editors show relation membership).

corollary: is there ever any benefit in a standalone way (not in a

[Talk-us] Deleting standalone empty nodes?

2015-12-07 Thread Steve Friedl
Hello all,

I'm mapping mostly in Southern California where I live and hike, and
sometimes I run across nodes with no tags, not part of anything, often the
owned by some kind of bot. You can't see them directly in OSM, but in JOSM
there's a trail of them paralleling Santiago Truck Trail:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/33.6903/-117.5494

Most of them are by bots - OSMF Redaction Account, woodpeck_fixbot - and
they appear to be spurious, but I'm not sure if they are there for a reason.

Is there ever any benefit in a standalone node with no tags, especially if
it doesn't appear to be in an "interesting" location relative to underlying
imagery?

Thanks,

Steve
