[Talk-us] MapQuest Open not updating as fast?
I've noticed that MapQuest Open is not regenerating tiles as fast as it used to a month or two ago. Actually, it's hard to tell if it is updating at all. Has anyone else noticed this? Maybe I missed an email. thanks, -Dion ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] Categorizing Stores/Restaurants
Businesses don't make it easy when they go by multiple names. Is it IBM or International Business Machines? BMW or Bayerische Motoren Werke or Bavarian Motor Works? This applies to people too. Is it Bill Clinton or William Clinton? One is technically correct but no one uses it. I'm sure you'll find similar issues with punctuation. IBM or I.B.M.? Starbucks Coffee? In your example of QFC, I'd tag it name=QFC and maybe throw in an alternate_name= or note=. -Dion > Date: Tue, 14 Jun 2011 16:58:40 -0700 > From: Clifford Snow > To: Josh Kraayenbrink , > talk-us@openstreetmap.org > Subject: Re: [Talk-us] Categorizing Stores/Restaurants > Message-ID: > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > > I'm a newbie and I've come across similar problems. It's easy to get the history of a way but how would I undo the deletion of a way? Or maybe I just don't know how to do it? My impression is I'm supposed to somehow find the changeset and send the ID to this list and hope someone can/will undo it. -Dion ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] Portland, OR datasets might be available
Forgive me if this has been brought up already, but Portland, OR seems to be placing some of its data into the public domain. Is the license suitable for inclusion in OSM? http://www.civicapps.org/about/data-policy thanks, -Dion ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] splitting OpenPisteMaps Wiki page?
I've tried twice to add the Cascade Range to OpenPisteMaps wiki, http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Piste_Maps . Both times the save didn't work. The amount of data is over 50K and per the guidelines should be split...but I can't find any information on how to create a new page. How do I accomplish either? thanks, -Dion ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Mapnik renders this fine > (actually that could be considered a deficiency of Mapnik in my > opinion) but it looks a little goofy in Osmarender. (On the other I agree; since the OSM wiki says bridge=yes needs a layer= tag, Mapnik is covering up mistakes in the data. That said, I'm also not a big fan of tags that _require_ other tags. Perhaps it should have been bridge=n where n is the layer. > hand, when one end of a "layer=0" bridge is directly at an > intersection with other "layer=0" streets, Osmarender renders this > beautifully and Mapnik makes it look odd.) Since some people consider > the entire "layer" tag to be "tagging for the renderer" these people > probably don't think it's important to add thorough layer information; > instead, they add just enough to make it look decent in "the > renderer". I am not of that opinion. To beat the "tagging for the renderer" horse for a minute: We want to avoid the following scenario: someone maps their local gym with shop=gym, name="Abs of Steel". The renderer does't do anything for shop=gym, so nothing shows up on the map. They then change the tags to something that does render, perhaps, leisure=sports_centre. However, in this case, they layer= tag is all about getting the map to be meaningful. I do see a legitimate question about whether a bridge over a river or canyon needs a layer tag. In Oregon, rivers are at level 0, just like roads. It sounds like some folks are mapping them at layer=-1. Maybe I should rephrase my question: is there any harm in adding a layer=1 tag to something that is already tagged bridge=yes? Would things be worse after doing this? I submit that the maps would look the same or better in most cases. Any objection to trying this on a smaller scale, say, just Portland, OR? thanks, -Dion ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] script for adding layer=1 to bridges
I've noticed that a lot of bridges don't include a layer= tag. I suspect this is because they render OK in mapnik...but not so well with osmarenderer. (Consider the railroad in http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=33.76931&lon=-84.53762&zoom=17&layers=0B00FTF.) I've spent a little time working on a script that would add a layer=1 tag to any way that has a bridge=yes tag but no layer tag. What's the right forum to discuss this? How might I go forward using this to correct data? I have a few questions about how to format the OSM XML. thanks, -Dion Dock ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
