Re: [Talk-us] Great Lakes Circle (Tours, bicycle) GIS-folk?

Thanks, Kerry. Research continues on my part. Maybe additional/better data
get entered into OSM as network=rcn or network=icn route=bicycle relations,
though I myself am taking a "go slow, get to be more 'in the know'" approach.
Keeping my eyes open and in listening mode.

The Great Lakes Circle Tour (http://greatlakescircletour.org/) organization is
the source on these signs. They are found scattered around the great lakes,
and we see a few Lake Michigan Circle Tour signs around Lake Michigan, but I
sure wouldn't want to try to navigate just based on the signs. These routes
existed LONG before the current version of the USBRS was created.

I could be wrong, but I would be pretty certain that it is the DOT that erects
the signs. Letting "strangers" (e.g. an NGO) erect signs on state highways is
"not done" in Michigan, or most other states.

Thank you Max and Kerry for your posts. I think we can agree that USBR 10 in
Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a "real route" that happens to be unsigned, but
it has been selected and is maintained by MDOT and is officially designated and
cataloged by AASHTO as USBR 10.

I think what Max referred to is he doesn't see any LMCT signage here, either.
This signage does exist (e.g.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes_Circle_Tour#/media/File:USRoute151NorthTerminus2.jpg
) though I am still unclear whether this is solely a route=road (for
automobiles) or is that PLUS a route for cyclists as well (and there may be
differences in actual infrastructure — that, too, remains unclear to me). I
have not yet received word whether there is an organization which erects these
signs (for four or five Great Lakes?) which might or likely does "administer"
the routes themselves, though I continue to seek out such a contact person /
GIS "department" or organization. Kerry, do you know anything along these
lines?

In the UP, USBR 10 isn't much more than the shoulder of US 2. It's
mostly paved, and every year there are fewer extremely narrow
sections! I guess there are probably a few signs, but not many.

At this point, MDOT has decided not to sign USBR 10 in the UP of Michigan.
They may do so in future, but they do have the route map and turn by turn
directions on their web site:

I live in Michigan and regularly drive US 2 in the Upper Peninsula.
The Lake Michigan route isn't signed in any sort of meaningful way.

[Talk-us] Great Lakes Circle (Tours, bicycle) GIS-folk?

2019-07-25 Thread stevea
If there are GIS-savvy people who are authoritative (even -ish) regarding Great
Lakes Circle Tours (Bicycle), please drop a line maybe here or maybe at
https://wiki.osm.org/wiki/Lake_Michigan_Circle_Tour_Bicycle_Route. (Which is
believed largely correct, though around Traverse City there are some sketchy
portions).

In my mind, these are a bit vague and hazy though they (4 out of 5 lakes have
routes or all 5?) seem real enough, with signs, a consistent set of
logo/graphics, T-shirts, fans Some contact of GIS-ish folks who have
something to say about where the routes are would be good; thanks if OSM makes
this connection.

In short, we're OK with Lake Michigan Circle Tour, what about all of the Great
Lakes?

These seem somewhere around or between rcn (where now) and quasi-national ncn
(maybe 4 become international?) That's maybe another topic for another thread.
