About a year after I decided to use that scheme, I purchased a new gps
unit which not only saved raw gps tracks but also showed a moving map
and routing instructions. The map data used by this device shows the
interstates using a substantially similar naming scheme.

I've been doing this:

On the highway way:
name=Interstate 90
ref=I-90 or ref=I 90
highway=motorway

On the on-ramps:
name=Highway Interstate 90 Westbound
highway=motorway_link

On the off-ramps:
name=to {connecting street name}
highway=motorway_link

I'm hoping that routers will be able to use name as a sensible routing
instruction.

"Exit right to Highway Interstate 90 Westbound"
"Continue on Interstate 90 for xx miles / kilometers"

Adding Eastbound / Westbound on the two ways may clutter rendering at
some zoom levels. When do we want to see both "I-90E" and "I-90W"
highway shields and when do we want to see just "I-90"? Using a
relation to join the two ways may help with this.

I do name="Interstate x Northbound" and ref="Ix N".

[Talk-us] Interstate name tag

2008-07-14 Thread Victor Snesarev
Hi all,

Just want to get people's opinion on naming Intestate Highways in the US... The
Wiki saysto
set "name" as "Interstate Highway ###". In practice I mostly see
"I-###".
Since interstates are divided into two oneway ways, I think each way should
be named "I-### Direction", where "Direction" is "East", "West", "North",
"South". So, one way of the interstate would be "I-40 East" and the other is
"I-40 West". Both ways would have "ref=I 40".

I know some editors already use this scheme. I got the idea from a link
provided by Alex Mauer.

Thoughts?
