Re: [OSM-Talk-ZA] Out of Copyright Topographic Available
I’ve only had a chance to see these now. Great work guys! This is awesome stuff to look at. I think it will be great for the physical terrain stuff. Mountain peaks are a dead giveaway. Rivers seem not too bad (although a few would have changed in certain areas due to human influence). It’s going to take a little discretion adding content from this layer, but the value is definitely there. Nicely done. There are many trig beacons on mountain peaks that can be added. 2.Consider whether it is appropriate whether to use the data from a topographic map over 50 years old. It makes sense to do so for mountain peaks and many (but not all) rivers and streams). Use place names with discretion as so many have changed. It is often useful to use old topographic map in conjunction with satellite imagery. 3.Re-align the slippy map with GPS tracks whenever you move from one area to another. In JOSM use the plugin imageryadjust. I have found some more old out of copyright maps that I am sending to Grant, which will be added in due course.
