Not currently. I'm working on adding an overlay (transparent layer)
which will show the year the imagery was captured in.
I only have the year the imagery was captured in.

Roughly the imagery is as follows:
 * Western Cape: 2009/2010
 * Northern Cape (Northern Section): 2008/2009
 * Northern Cape (rest): 2010/2011
 * Eastern Cape: 2011/2012
 * KZN: 2008/2009
 * Free State (west): 2008
 * Free State (east): 2010/2011
 * Gauteng: 2011/2012
 * North West: 2009/2010
 * Limpopo: 2011/2012
 * Mpumalanga: 2011/2012

Medupi power station was captured in Q1 2012.

Hi
Is there an easy way of seeing the age of the CD:NGI image in JOSM? Show
tile info only shows the tile name and zoom level.

Thanks Grant,

Your xml file works well. Qgis is just much slower than my browser to
load the data :(

You are using EPSG:4326 projection instead of EPSG:3857
Use this file in QGIS as the raster layer:

Yes, I will try keep the imagery updated as CD:NGI make additional
imagery available. All the imagery so far has been collected in person
from CD:NGI in Mowbray, Cape Town. The aerial.openstreetmap.org.za
server is located in London.

Yes, over 45% of the imagery was captured in the last 2 years...

Hi Grant,

The imagery is fantastic/ fast and VERY up to date. There is now no excuse
for being able to do accurate mapping on even the smallest of towns in SA.

Is the imagery updated as new images become available? It has to be newer
than 2008, probably 2012 in some areas!!

Great stuff! I am on holiday in Graskop, and have not been reading

The imagery is great for tracing and normally of excellent positional
accuracy. (Better than Bing Aerial in most cases)
The errors are mistakes I have made or bugs in the source files
leaving some sections blank.
Example:
http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/?zoom=10&lat=-31.2195&lon=23.25729&layers=B0

> Can

Naaa, I just need to go through it and work out what is causing the
bug... I suspect a problem with the GeoReferencing on a small subset
of the source files.

Yes, the imagery was collected using USB disks from CD:NGI's head
office in Cape Town. The first set was brought to London by
http://osm.org/user/Burger and the November updates were collected by
me in person.

Thanks for the efforts Grant. When you say errors, what does this mean?
Does it mean tracing using the imagery surrounding erross will be
inaccurate? Can we help with conversion/fixing work? Out of curiosity are
you using a "USB disk network" to move the data. That's a lot of data even
for fast UK networks.

[OSM-Talk-ZA] Updated CD:NGI Aerial Imagery Now Available

2012-12-31 Thread Grant Slater
Hi OSM ZA,

Updated: http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/

Contains new imagery (collect from CD:NGI during November 2012) and
I've finally filled in most of the missing areas.

Percentage of the imagery captured in the year:
 - 2012: 17.8%
 - 2011: 27.6%
 - 2010: 21.1%
 - 2009: 28.8%
 - 2008: 4.7%

The aerial imagery (as supplied) is 3004 GigaBytes and made up of
45454 tiled GeoTIFF files.
Combined they would make an image: 3256402 x 2875186 pixels or 9.3
Million Megapixel ;-)

The imagery is available in JOSM and Potlatch2 as a background layer
using the "South Africa: CD:NGI Aerial" preset.
Please remember to add the "source=ngi-aerial" tag when using the
imagery. In Potlatch2 this can be done by pressing "B" when the new
imagery is set as the background.

There are 3 errors I am aware of:
 - Black missing strip near Victoria West, NC
 - Black missing square near Villiers, FS
 - 2 Black thin strips, 1: just east of Mooi River, KZN and 2: just
west of Greytown, KZN
The errors will get fixed when I have a chance, but are not currently
a high priority.

The imagery should also finally be moved to a beefier/faster server
within the next 24 hours.

Regards
 Grant
