Special Milonga, June 2 at Chicago Dance

Susana Miller will return to Chicago this Thursday, May 31 for a weekend of
workshops next Saturday, June 2nd and Sunday, June 3rd at Dance Connection,
3117 N. Clybourn, Chicago.

We will also have a special milonga with Susana Miller on Saturday, June 2nd
from 10pm - 2am at Chicago Dance, 3660 W. Irving Park, Chicago. Milonga is free
to guests that purchase 6 class package or who were a Full Festival pass holder
to the 2012 Chicago Mini Tango Festival.

Susana has structured the weekend of workshops to be progressive and the
workshops build off each other. Please join our out of town and out of country
guests this weekend.

There will be limited enrollment. We will only have available the full 6 class
package or a full day pass. We will attempt to gender balance the enrollment so
please email us at chicagomilongu...@yahoo.com prior to your registering for
the weekend. Susana Miller will also be available for private lessons during
her stay from May 31 - June 6th.

Biography
Susana Miller is the most prominent teacher in the world today of the
milonguero style of tango or what Argentines call apilado. This style is
danced in the crowded clubs of central Buenos Aires. It is a strictly social
style that emphasizes musicality and the connection between partners.

Susana has researched and studied the dancing of the older milongueros, each of
whom has created a unique way to tango. She has been able to decipher their
distinct vocabularies and choreographic combinations, and found a way to
transmit these to students.

Susana encourages students to employ more rhythm in their dance, to
discover their own dance vocabularies, and to learn how to shape and shrink
these in space. For women, she encourages active following, in which the woman
interprets the messages that the leader's body and the spirit are sending.
Clarin, the major Buenos Aires daily paper, called her one of the four
mostimportant influences on contemporary tango, along with Miguel Angel Zotto,
Gustavo Naveira and Gerardo Portalea.

Susana is a native of Buenos Aires and has been dancing and teaching tango
since the late 1980s revival of social tango. She founded and operates her own
tango academy in Buenos Aires, and is the owner of one of B.A.'s most popular
tango clubs, El Beso. She has made annual teaching tours to the United States
and Europe since 1994. She will help students improve posture, axis, grounding,
breathing, balance, and sensitivity to the lead and follow roles.

She aims to encourage dancers to develop their own unique improvisational
styles through knowledge of the music, space and body. Her classes will
emphasize step quality and rhythm. Rather than predetermined patterns, she will
impart a basic choreographic vocabulary that allows dancers to creatively shape
their
own language.

My name is Eduardo Tami, I´m an Argentine flutist specializing in tango music .
www.eduardotami.com.ar

Now I am organizing my schedule for our September / October 2012 tour
and let you know my offering, in case you are interested in hosting our visit.
I travel with my group: A musicians trio (flute, piano and
guitar) plus a couple of dancers, trying to bring a little bit of our
culture through the music, dance and with the contact with students.

This will be my 11th. tour and I have already visited around 60 universities in
the USA.
Generally our hosts are Music, Spanish or Dance Depts. (or all together),
sometimes with the cooperation of student's organizations.

For the final concert, this year´s novelty is that you can choose between
our traditional repertoire consisting  of Tango, Milonga, Waltz and Candombe, or
a new one which includes (in around half concert) another music from the
Argentine and other countries in Latin America folklore.

The activities proposed are the following:
Language Depts.
A lecture  for students enrolled in Spanish or other areas, e.g.: Latin
American Studies interested in the correlations between Tango history and
politics/economics events in Argentina from 1870 to present. This is usually
a recompilation of Contemporary Argentine History and Lifestyle through
Tango pieces played by the musicians(live), illustrated with powepoint
images.
Depending on the students level, I can do it in English, Spanish (or a mix)

Music Dept.
- A class for music students where we teach them how to play the basics of a
tango (the students are the ones who play the music and based on my
experience they enjoy it very much)
- A class for students enrolled in World Music for general culture
(similar to the Language Dept. but in English and with more musical
elements)
- Classes for flute, piano or/and guitar students with tango resources (it
is not about the technical aspect of the instrument but interpretation).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8bJkY9fXZUfeature=youtu.be
- I would like to invite some professors of the faculty to perform with us a
couple of pieces in our final concert. (I send the scores in advance)
http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez-tF9HGHTsfeature=user In Mansfield
University (Pennsylvania) with flute professor Dr. Moulton
Dance Dept.
A class to learn the basics about dancing Tango.
