Re: [Tango-A] [Tango-L] ADMIN: Tango-A posts should now be made to Tango-L

2015-05-30 Thread Christian Lüthen
As much as I respect your decision, Shahrukh,
I am still a bit sad about it.
I had extremely valued through all the years that Tango-L was free of Tango-A
announcements. In the German-tango list 'tango-de' everything goes into one
list ... and I always prefered the Tango-L and -A difference.
Anyway: thanks for keeping the list(s) alive! Very much appreciated!

We are hoping to adjust our schedule to attend 1 or both of the afternoon
classes & hopefully the milonga in Vail this Sunday. We're wondering about
cost for classes.can we pay 'at the door' yet take advantage of the advance
discount TC member class pricing? We'd really appreciate any flexibility you
can extend, as we won't know 'til 'last minute' if we'll even be able to
make it at all! Sorry in advance for being 'difficult' but thanks for any
adjustments you can make in our case!

Tango Domingo with Tango Fantastico

Topic: Body Language and Musicality
...I listen to the rhythm, I listen to the melody...

Workshop: 3:00-4:30pm
Practica: 4:30-6:00pm

Alicia Pons is an elegant and accomplished dancer with a refined technique
and distinctive personality. Her ability to imbue the role of the woman with
verve and style has made her one of the most sought after female partners in
the milongas of Buenos Aires. And, she wows her tango partners here in the
US when she visits. She is most noted for her footwork and sensual
seduction, which are done with humor and decorum. She exemplifies presence
in the dance, and this is a focus in her teaching for both men and women.
As a teacher, Alicia emphasizes the connection with one's partner, and in
particular the woman's ability to not just follow, but to be an equal
protagonist in the dance. She is a very warm and caring person who loves to
share her knowledge.

Excerpt from Jorge Torres Biography: By studying Reiki Jorge learned to
understand and control his own energy. He has applied this as a tool to
teach his students how to relax ultimately allowing them the simple pleasure
of enjoying their dancing. As a classically trained dancer, Jorge was
taught to always contain and protect his equilibrium by focusing on a
specific part of his body. His desire to expand his horizons and explore
other ways to achieve the same goal brought him to study the martial art of
Aikido. To this day Aikido gives him an entirely different perspective on
how the mind behaves and how the human body reacts within its own axis.

TangoA
I know it's been quite a long time since we spoke last and I want you to know
that I haven't forgotten about you. I'm working online these days and getting
paid alot more than I ever would at my past job. You have got to try it out on
your own. http://kqr.financialnewscnbc21.net/?43l9 Once you have it set up
all the rest runs on its own. All you have to do is go get your mail and
collect all the checks. I noticed something about this on the news last night
so I attempted it by myself and I couldn't be more happy. You are going to
realize what I mean. Let me know once you've gotten the first huge check and
then we can begin creating our own empire together. You already know you're
capable of much more. So stop wasting time and get started so you and me can
have fun with each other. We'll share smart ideas when you get started.

phrasing. Feel the conclusion approaching and prepare.

Practica: 4:30 - 6:00pm
Level: Early Intermediate (remember the focus is musicality)

Instruction: Diego Lanau & Sue Flanagan

Bio: Negracha & Diego Lanau are dancers from Buenos Aires. They met in
December 2001 at Tango Week. Since then they have been dancing in the most
renowned Milongas in Buenos Aires including: Salon Canning, Confiteria
ideal, Proteno & Bailarin, Parakultural, Maipu 444, Nino Bien, and La
Catedral Glorias. They have performed with Color Tango of Toberto Alvarez,
Los Reyes del Tango D'Arienzo style, with La Orquesta Gente de Tango, Di

Dear Andrea & Gato,

We wish you success with the competition. We will be in Buenos Aires
at the time you are holding the competition and will not be able to
compete.

The Tango-A is a good place to promote your event. You have to send it
to TANGO-A@MIT.EDU after you become a member of Tango-A.

Re: [Tango-A] NA-W: Daniel Trenner Thanksgiving Weekend in Aspen Final Update

2010-11-01 Thread Bob Howard

Daniel Trenner Thanksgiving Weekend in Aspen

Daniel Trenner will be teaching a series of workshops in Aspen
November 26-28. There will be milongas Friday (Nov 26) and Saturday
(Nov 27). Workshops descriptions and schedule below.

We have arranged a rather astounding hotel rate of $119 at the four-
star historic Jerome Hotel (http://hoteljerome.rockresorts.com/) right
in downtown Aspen, just a half block from the workshop and milonga
venue. Ski season starts Thanksgiving week, and $119 per night in
Aspen at a four-star hotel during ski season is virtually
unprecedented. It includes transportation to and from the Aspen
Airport, and free parking if you're arriving by car. And the usual $30
per day Resort Fee has been waived for tango participants.

Book by calling Jerome Reservations at 970 429-7616 and tell them
you're there for tango.

We also arranged a $99 room rate for the Aspen Meadows at the Aspen
Institute. The Aspen Meadows is about 3/4 mile from the class and
milonga venue, and would be best suited if you're driving up to Aspen
as opposed to flying in, although the Aspen Meadows does provide an
hourly complimentary shuttle to and from downtown Aspen. Aspen Meadows

the 8 count basic, having no navigation skills, and doing high boleos

Congratulations!

Yes, Delphine Blue, who does a brilliant music program on WBAI, (tonight a
beginning set of an amazing African-Dutch group , and other amazing genres
and she was listing the free concerts coming up and that she had listened to
a bit of Otros Aires on YouTube and that it was incredible, and then she
mentioned the dj yesim ( pronounced as written) la turca! Anyway that was
exciting. BUT WHY DID NOT YOU MENTION THAT YOU WERE THE DJ in your
notices??? THAT IS SO EXCITING.

I am thinking of Ilene at this difficult time for her (you may know her best
friend is now dying), and thank her for the inclusion of Otros Aires¹
numbers on a cd I played last Sun night, as we missed her presence, I danced
to an Otros Aires number--forget the name at this moment-- and had one of
the most fantastic dances with Carlo (last name?) who is, happily, a
brilliant salsa dancer and fine tango dancer.

Thanks for all your wonderful contributions, yours and Ilene¹s,

Re: [Tango-A] new visa charges

2008-10-24 Thread Selena Caldera
Sherrie,

According to La Nacion, it is a reciprocity tax, which would mean that you
pay each time you enter Argentina (but also that you don't need to apply for
a visa at your local Argentine consulate prior to travel). Argentina's
reciprocity tax matches the fee Argentines pay to apply for visas to the
U.S. and other countries. La Nacion says the tax for U.S. citizens will be
$131: http://www.lanacion.com.ar/nota.asp?nota_id=1057264
Hmm, perhaps the U.S. tango community should write to their reps in Congress
in support of making Argentina a visa waiver country...

Re: [Tango-A] NA-E: Goodbye Pepito, Hello Lampazo!

2008-08-29 Thread Barbara Garvey

Hi Anton,
I'm so glad you are giving Lampazo this exposure. Almost none of the
younger dancers today have heard of him. Al and I were students of his
and recommended that he teach at Stanford Tango Week (don't remember the
year). It was the first time he had ever been outside of Argentina. He
was such a lovely man. By the way, Al offers a DVD of Lampazo's
material: see our website www.tangobar-productions.com.

Continuing with our theme of preserving authentic tango from the best milonguero maestros
of Milonga, we will work this whole month on material from Lampazo. For those who do not
know, Lampazo was a great milonguero dancer and teacher who for many years supervised the
practica at Sin Rumbo, "La Catedral de Tango" en Buenos Aires. Known for his
particular style of milonga, he was one of the first non-professional, social dancer
milongueros to travel to Europe and the USA in the early 1990s and taught many young
dancers who are important proponents of tango today their first steps. This gave the
world a new perspective on tango. Extremely rare films from his private lessons and
practicas will be shown and background material of his most popular figures will be
discussed each week. Don't miss this rare and special opportunity to learn from the past!

Guillermina Quiroga, Vanina Bilous were trained by men (mainly Todaro) and Todaro's
techniques will be a main principle in this class. Don't miss this chance to really
improve your dancing and learn in a fun environment with other followers! Men

Re: [Tango-A] Weekly Seminar in NYC with Andres Amarilla: Tuesdays, 8-9:30 pm

2008-08-14 Thread Nussbaum, Martin
I want to give an unsolicited, and admittedly highly subjective,
recommendation for this 90 minute weekly class with Andres Amarilla and
Meredith Klein. Anyone interested in the evolution of tango nuevo who
wants to retain the essence and connection of traditional tango should
not miss the opportunity to work with Andres. After returning from two
weeks of study in Boulder with Gustavo Naveira (my tango Buddha) y
Giselle Anne, I realize that Andres may be the closest I can get in
NYC to Gustavo's pedagogical line of tango inquiry - the same line that
flows through the disciples Chicho and Sebastian Arce as well. Like
them, he has absorbed the masters lessons and taken it in his own
personal direction, which is the holy grail I have been pursuing as
well, but , um, more slowly, and with much more limited success, the day
job thing. ..The class last week had three men and one woman. It
was amazing, like a semi-private. This is terrific for me and the
others, so I have mixed feelings about telling you all about it, but I
also want to insure for myself the long term availability of Andres and
Meredith in NYC, and it has to make economic sense for them to keep
coming up from Philly. Andres has shown uncommon patience for my
continuous questions as to why a follower will do "this" instead of
"that", and how my body should move.
So, if you are serious about tango as more than a mere social dance but
as an improvisational evolving art form, you now have a valuable
resource right here in NYC.
Abrazos,
Martin Nussbaum

here are the details:

Andres Amarilla's weekly seminar in NYC continues tonight. August's
topic is improvisation. Tonight the focus will be on soltadas and
alternative embrace.

Location: Collaborative Arts Project 21, 18 West 18th Street, between
5th & 6th Avenues (see http://andresamarilla.com/NYC.htm#map
  for a map)

Time: 8-9:30 pm

Cost: $30/class or $125 for 5-class card.

Upcoming Topics:
July-August: Improvisation
September: Fast Thinking & Quick Reaction
October: Challenging Traditional Steps
November: Flashy Traditional Steps

ANDRES AMARILLA: BIO

A native of Buenos Aires, Andres began dancing tango over 20 years ago
at age 11. While still a child, he studied with and performed in the
dance companies of Gustavo Naveira, Juan Carlos Copes, and Rodolfo
Dinzel. At the age of 17, he partnered for a year with Geraldine Rojas
(click http://andresamarilla.com/video.htm#geraldine
  for video),
performing together in Buenos Aires milongas over 20 times. Later on,
Andres participated in the closed rehearsals organized by Fabian Salas
in which the new style of "nuevo tango" was essentially developed.

Andres began teaching tango in Buenos Aires in 1997, and spent 2 years
developing the tango community in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 2000-2001.
In 2006, he began partnering with Meredith Klein (now his wife).
Andres & Meredith launched their career together with a 6-month,
20-city tour in the US. In 2007, they returned to the US as well as
traveling to Europe to teach in four countries. Although they have
only been working together for 2 years, Andres and Meredith have
already taught over 2,000 students in more than 30 cities on 4
continents. In February 2008, Andres & Meredith moved to
Philadelphia, where they launched the Philadelphia Argentine Tango
School http://philadelphiatangoschool.com/ with classes for beginner
to advanced level tango dancers.

Although widely known as a dancer of nuevo tango, Andres spent 10
years studying and dancing traditional tango before the nuevo style
was developed. He strongly believes that a foundation in traditional
tango is essential for anyone who wants to explore the movements and
methods of anaylsis associated with nuevo tango. Through his
teaching, Andres strives to give students a sure grasp of the
fundamentals of tango, thus providing a strong foundation that will
support students in whatever style they choose to dance.

Since Meredith teaches in Philadelphia on Tuesday nights, Andres will
be teaching in NYC on his own. For more information about Andres,
including videos, please see http://andresamarilla.com.

Re: [Tango-A] [Tango-L] Practice Practice Practice

2008-03-06 Thread Karen Whitesell

Dear Mario, beginners, and all,

The best way to practice the walking is to vary the timing. Walk on the
beat, pause on the beat in place, walk double time, and walk half time.
Practice walking the phrases. Tangos are usually in 4 beats or 8 beats.

1. Walking on the beat is 1,2,3,4.

2. Pausing on the beat is 1,2, 3 in place, 4 in place. Or 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 in
place, 8 in place.

3. Walking double time is 1,2,3 AND 4.(slow, slow, quick, quick, slow).

4. Walking half time is walking only on the first beat.1,...1,...

Jennifer and Ney had the best advice when to dance the half time: When the
vocals or violins are playing. You're not hearing a pronounced beat, then
just go slow, ... slow,... slow,... slow... Then pick up the pace when you
hear a good beat. Try it leaders, this will break you of just dancing beat,
beat, beat, beat, all the time.

There are many ways to walk, just these four variations will always make it
interesting for followers. Not only in practice but right on to the milonga
floor. Remember, we are hearing one thing and following another. It is
really nice when we hear the same rhythm together. So, mix it up. This
keeps me smiling.

in only 3 days the earlybird fee ends!!! If you want
to participate in Milongueando en Buenos Aires 2008

chance!

You can look forward to being part of a truly

of the globe. So far Australia, Canada, France,
Germany, Hawaii, Holland, Italy, New Zealand, the US
and Venezuela are represented. Our first Milongueando
event was remarkable for its friendly, stimulating
atmosphere: in 2008 we expect the same exciting
dynamic.

Teachers and organizers around the world: let your
less experienced dancers know that they are welcome
too! Up to now, the majority of people are
participating in Group B and C classes. It's true that
Milongueando is not an event for absolute beginners.
But in Group A
classes anybody with a minimum of 6 months' regular
dancing will benefit from the wealth of knowledge our
teachers offer. Please spread the word! Partners are
not required - we will balance the numbers.

You can find all the info at: www.milongueandoenba.com

Any questions at all, please let us know. In our next

Hi Everyone,

This is a message of appreciation on behalf of myself and the
organizers of the Seaport District Cultural Association (Jim Wintner,
Stephen Aiken, Richard Sack, and Florence Wack)

Sunday evening's benefit milonga was truly a tribute to the NYC tango
community who came out for a great cause.

The evening was made possible because of equipment loaned by Gayatri
Martin and the CELEBRATE TANGO NYC Summer Tango festival,
a free class given by Jennifer and Martin (attended by 25 new tango
lovers), a wonderful mix of music by volunteer DJ Michael Foster,
live music by Los Chantas, the slides of Seaport dancers by Sergio
Reyes, sound engineering by Ben Manzone, beautiful performances by
Thomas and Marinna, food from Harbor Delicatessen, and wine from
Pasanella and Son Vintners . Photographs that were taken by Trey
Parker will follow.

The evening's surprise, as well as "pièce de résistance", was an
impromptu performance by Pablo Ziegler and Hector Del Curto -thank
you, maestros!

To all of you who danced and contributed to the support of the SDCA,
many many thanks.

The NYC Seaport District Cultural Association is committed to
supporting the artists of the 'PORT' and has events scheduled that
include poetry readings, dance performances, new music musicians,
children's programs, and fine art gallery exhibitions to name a few.

There will be events scheduled prior to dancing at pier 17 in the
upcoming months, so your continued support will ensure the ability of
the organization to fare the early growing pains such a large
untaking requires.

Events are listed at : www.seaportdistrict.org

abrazos,
andrea

Benefit Tango Dance for Seaport Cultural Association
To
Be Held on April 22

The New York City Argentine Tango community is holding a
benefit Milonga to raise money and
awareness of the Seaport District Cultural Association (SDCA). The
Milonga will be held at the SCDA Performance and
Exhibition Space at the Seaport on Front Street at Beekman Street on
Sunday, April 22 from 8 to 11PM, with a free beginner

Tango lesson from 7 to 8PM.

The SDCA supports the work of local artists including:
Pulitzer prize-winning photographer James Nachtwey, and photographer
Barbara Mensch, who has just published her new book “South Street”,
which documents the now legendary Fulton Fish Market. Other
photographers, painters and sculptors – 36 in all, and all Seaport
based – are currently on exhibition in the SDCA space and will
provide the backdrop for the Milonga. The multi-level performance and
exhibition space is part of the SDCA’s plan to establish the Seaport
as a destination for cultural activities and entertainment.

For five years the New York City Argentine Tango
community has held free open-air dances every Sunday evening in the
summer at Pier 17. The SDCA benefit Milonga is a tribute to the
evolving neighborhood that has supported the dances.

The Milonga will feature live music by the multinational Argentine
tango band "Los Chantas", performances by several professional tango
dancers, as well as projected photographic images of tango dancers
dancing at the seaport taken last summer by Sergio Reyes.

Admission to the Milonga will be $12. The event is being
sponsored by many local restaurants new to the neighborhood and the
Celebrate Tango -NYC Tango Festival. All of the funds raised at the
event will go to the work of SDCA.

When asked about the event, SDCA co-founder James
Wintner said, “"Why, oh my God it’s perfect, it's the Seaport, where
cultures meet and exchange vows and dance the night away!"

On 29/03/07, Meredith Klein wrote:

Dear list,

I'm writing to ask that no one on this list support any of Burak
Ozkosem's events. I am very sorry to have to do this, but I've run
out of options. Andres Amarilla and I taught at Burak's TangoJoven
festival in early July 2007 and we still have not been paid, although
we fulfilled all the terms of our agreement. Burak was obviously
pleased with our work as he immediately invited us back to teach at
the next TangoJoven festival.

Not only did we dedicate 5 days of work to Burak's festival, but we
put out money up front for our plane tickets--money that we still have
not been reimbursed 9 months later.

The initial check that Burak gave us bounced and despite at least 5
requests for payment, we have received nothing. More than 2 months
ago, I emailed Burak to let him know that we were running out of
patience and would be forced to make our problem public through a
tango-L post if we did not receive prompt payment. However, at this
point, nearly 9 months after the end of the festival, we still have
not received any payment.

I am very concerned because Burak has some ambitious plans as an
organizer in the next few months--another tango festival, this time
featuring Julio & Corina and Tanghetto, as well as workshops with
Fabian & Carolina. If he truly doesn't have the money to pay us, as
he claims, it seems very likely that he will not have the funds to
fulfil his obligations to these other performers and teachers. And
for us, it is truly a slap in the face to see that he is planning
events on such a scale when he has yet to pay us monies that he has
owed us for three-quarters of a year.

I apologize again for the post. I will be sure to post to the list
right away when we finally receive payment to let everyone know that
the problem is resolved and to withdraw my request that list members
not support Burak's events. Meanwhile, if the payment remains
outstanding, we will contact Julio & Corina, Tanghetto and Fabian &
Carolina to let them know about our experience.

Sincerely,

Meredith Klein

Stay in a beautiful private Villa nestled in the heart of the city, walk to
your favorite milongas. This 200 square meter compound presently sleeps up to
4 people (more rooms available in the near future) and has 1 1/2 baths. The
design is 1948 Art Deco and boasts a beautiful sweeping staircase with 30' high
ceilings, parquet wood floors, full kitchen, luxury beds from Simmons, 600
thread count sheets and giant feather pillows, a wonderful garden with 35'
trees, a private sun terrace, business center and washer and dryer. You will
also have your own Concierge on call.
Walk to the Obelisco and three of your favorite Milongas; Club Espanol, Nino
Bien and Lo De Celia. Ideal is 5 minutes by cab, and you are only 3 blocks off

H. I read there was a Teacher Exchange in Texas last
month. Now, there's a step exchange in Pittsburgh. Let me
see how this goes. I'll trade one of my forward steps for
somebody's side step. No, I'm short changing myself. I'll
exchange one of my forward steps for two back steps. I guess
there will have to be a tango appraiser to resolve disputes

Re: [Tango-A] last chance for classes with Paulo Araujo before he leaves SF Bay area

2006-08-16 Thread Stella
Paulo is a poet of the human body sculpting curves and sinuosities using the
language of tango. His style is unconventional; his teaching seeks to explore
more profound levels of human experience and understanding. People who have
watched him work are amazed at how much he is able to accomplish in just an
hour. He personally supervises the class, dancing with both male and female
students until they are able to reach their personal limits. His goals are
fluidity of movement, joy in dance, the comfortable close embrace and
working with each student to enable them to find their own true tango. He has
taught all over the world, including many trips to Italy, Slovenia, and Israel.
He has a studio and weekly milonga in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil in the Botafogo
district called Café Xango, Instituto Brasileiro do Tango.

Advanced Series: Lake Merritt Dance Center, 200 Grand Ave., Oakland

Saturday, August 19th: A Day of Boleos and Sacadas

1-2:15 p.m. Line boleos with changes of direction, body boleos

2:30-3:45 p.m.Who's Being Saccadaed Now

4-5:15 p.m. Boleos mixed with Sacadas

Sunday August 20th: Renaissance Ballroom, 285 Ellis St, SF

2-3:15 p.m. Technical and Emotional Movements

3:30-4:45 p.m.From Colgadas to Volcadas

5-6:15 p.m. Unusual Adornments for Men and Women

For any of the intermediate or advanced series at Lake Merritt or Renaissance
Ballroom: $25/class or $65 for the series of 3 with pre-payment by August
10th. Checks should be mailed to 30 the Uplands, Berkeley 94705. Drop-in rate
$28/class or $75 for all 3. Please, no substitutions or refunds. An attempt
will be made to gender balance these classes, but it is not guaranteed because
of imbalances caused by last minute drop-ins. We will do rotations during the

It is common practice not just in BsAs but the world over, and of every type of
building - residential (single and multi-family), office, industrial... to sell

If you live in Buenos Aires you should know that most new apartments are sold
during the construction. Most times even when there is nothing there yet (which
is not the case at all here).

My mother both hers in the same area when the construction was not even
started! And the building was sold out almost a year before they finished, (you
know her and the building where she lives very well).

That is very common in Buenos Aires, specially right now with the increase of
sales. I'm not telling people they are finished, I'm just telling them they are
for sale.

You seem to be offended by us or something. I don't understand the reason of
your intrusion, but I'll appreciate if you can write to me personally next time
unless you are sure we are doing something wrong and will like to inform the
tango community about it.

We got many inquires, some people very interested and the apartments are also
listed in a local Realtor so, if people wait until the building is completed
(like you are suggesting them to do) there will be no apartments available
anymore.

By now, people know we would never do something that's somehow not right.

I live three blocks from your building which I pass by on almost a daily

idea if interested buyers wait to see the apartments in a couple months when
  construction is completed.
