What on earth happened there? I have only just got this message which
was created and sent 12 hours previously. Just one of those one off
(hopefully) mail glitches.

Progressbar jumps from 0% to 100% when downloading messages by pop3

2004-03-25 Thread NetVicious
I'm looking for some weeks ago the progressbar on the Connection
Center jumps from 0% to 100% when downloading messages by pop3
protocol (I don't tested it using an IMAP connection). It could be
seen better if we are receiving a large message.

I think this bug was started when Ritlabs changed the pop3
implementation on 2.03 Betas.

2004-03-25 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Dear Ian,

@26-Mar-2004, 07:07 +1100 (25-Mar 20:07 UK time) Ian A. White [IAW]
in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to Marck:

MDP>> Have you looked at the archives? There is zero address
MDP>> exposure on our lists.
...

IAW> The first thing that concerned me was the fact that the
IAW> messages to this list were being archived and that archive was
IAW> publicly available. I have looked at GMane and the addresses
IAW> are not shown. As those contributing to the list were not asked
IAW> if their messages to the list were to be archived, what other
IAW> archives do these messages appear in, and are the addresses
IAW> exposed on those?

www.mail-archive.com - which also hides all email addresses. When I
say zero, I *mean* zero!!!

You may get spammed from writing to this list but *never* because
someone got your address from any of the list archives. Like I said,
the only loophole is in Message IDs, but we have a published
workaround for that. They'd have to harvest your address by being on
this list.

IAW> I do not used a valid e-mail address when I post to newsgroups
IAW> for this very reason. I was also under the impression that this
IAW> was an e-mail list and not a newsgroup.

This *is* an email list with 2 archives. Neither archive is a
"newsgroup". One is the old mail-archive system, with only a web
front end. It is old and hard to use. The other is GMane. GMane is a
service that provides email list archived data using NNTP protocol.
That *doesn't* make it a news group.

IAW> This is why I now take steps to prevent my messages from being
IAW> archived.

But you don't need to. There is no reason to.

IAW> So far the messages are now in one other archive that does not
IAW> show the addresses. Are we going to be told when some other
IAW> arhiver decides to create and make available another archive of
IAW> the messages but expose the addresses?

You will always be informed of any changes and our archiving
policies are completely described in the list Info pages (see
attached footer).

IAW> Even when lists are not archived in this way, members of the
IAW> list can get spammed when one of the members gets infected with
IAW> a worm and addresses from lists held on their computer are used
IAW> to generate spam in newsgroups, so let's not make it easier for
IAW> spammers than it presently is.

We don't. I promise!

It can't be dictionary attack

1/ My domain isn't so obvious, especially for Russians
2/ I have shared-POP and I'm spammed only on "message-id"-emails from my messages
(into another list) AND localpart from _this_ list... Two other
addresses for thebat.dutaint.com are clean...

"Don't trust anybody"... Address was grabbed or
- *.ru subscriber of this list
- one of admins my POP-server (and it must be root, for reading content,
username in my case means nothing) - but I know _this_ ISP's team, and
hope (well, sure on 99.9%) there aren't such bullshit in it

Yes, I observed this too. I recently created a valid alias named
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for use with NGs, and there was no spam yet.
Ok, it's only three weeks, that I use it, but all other addresses I
used before in newsgroups were spammed the very next day... It seems
that the /smart/ spam bots are being fooled. It's probably a question
of "how long?"... ;-)
