I support your point, MaXxX. ;)

I am also using *only* the plain text viewer and these "colonicons" are
getting on my nerves, too.

Is it possible to create a filter which deletes anything between two
colons from messages?

Upon testing at this end, they seem to be downloaded once I do

I face a similar problem. It happens when I have a fairly large number
of emails to download. The CC freezes at random points. It could be
the sixth message or the sixtieth. I can never tell when it will
happen. The only solution for me is to invoke the Task Manager and
kill The Bat.

It's become so irritating that I'm seriously considering changing back

I purchased The Bat.

Has a bug report been posted about this?

Perhaps

Yes, and that is my point. An example: Here is a subject a few posts
up: "Invalid HTML (was: Beta cycle suggestion)." Ok, I want to do a
search on "Beta cycle." What I get are all the posts with "beta cycle"
in the post (including the subject). So, I also get this specific post
that has nothing whatsoever to do with "beta cycle." Multiply that by
however many occurrences there in the archives.

I understand.

"it is a poster's responsable decision to change the subject or open a
new thread" is the potential problem, IMO

None of this is really worth the bandwidth. I was only pointing out an
annoyance in searching the archives when the subject lines of threads
change so often. I will certainly live with it and I appreciate all
the comments.

search any more, would it?

KA> If it were my board (which it isn't), I would not allow the changing

We have experimented with deleting the references for new subjects on
the OT list. The result was that the history of the thread was lost,
and it was useless for those who wanted to go up the thread and see
what the line of argument was.

It's not how I see it. Threads should not be hijacked, of course, but
some threads develop different "arms", and it is a poster's
responsable decision to change the subject or open a new thread.

We should change the subject of this thread (again) if we continue,
but now I have the feeling we should continue on TBOT anyway.

Yes, this is not the problem. As the screen shot suggests, I tried
opening it using the File -> Open command and this still gave me the
same message.

On inspecting the properties of the three files, I see that the
problem file only has one Tab labled General, while the other two

this is not a bug, files "winmail.dat" and "message.att" are created
by MS Outlook with MS Exchange and encoded by proprietary format
called MS-TNEF, only Microsoft products can decode them AFAIK.

1) You can ask sender to change setting of their MS Exchange from
MS-TNEF to Base64, files will be accessible from TB and other
alternative mail clients

2) You can use utility FENTUN, which can decode file, you can save it
to disk then and open in MS Word.

File is here for example, reg files for specifying Fentun as default
for dat and att extensions are included:
