Backup Observation and Questions

2005-03-02 Thread Avi Yashar
I have used the TB backup utility to transfer TB from one computer to
another. Unfortunately, I find that there are problems in both the
backup process and the restore process.

The backup process appears to work fine if I don't backup any IMAP
accounts. But at least one IMAP account seems to have a problem with
the Inbox. So, okay, I just skipped the backup of the IMAP accounts
(just test accounts anyway).

When I do the restore process, however, I discover new problems.
Everything is fine except the attachments. When I try to restore the
attachments, the restore utility fails each time. Everything goes well
if I restore without the attachments.

So my question is: Can I just copy my entire directory structure over
the installation as a primitive sort of backup. In other words, just
zip up my TB directory along with all of its subdirectories (including
the attachments) and then just unzip those directories on the new
computer? That seems to be the only way I can get all of my settings
and files using the built-in TB backup-restore process.

My laptop crashed yesterday and I had to rebuild everything :">)(*&^%$!.
Luckily, I make backups of my TB program directory and email folder
(encrypted!!) to another PC every day (using SynchBackSE). Once a week, I also
export TB registry entries. After I restored the TB program and email folder
from the other PC to my laptop and imported the registry entries, I had TB up
and running in about 5 minutes without any problem.

Oh yes, I do it all the time, it may be primitive but it works absolutely
 perfectly every time.

Make a directory in your TB! folder and copy the text below to notepad and
save it into that folder as register.bat.

Then run it and it will save all your registry entries as a .reg file into
 that directory.

Then zip your complete TheBat! folder up and move it to your other PC.
Double click the reg file and it'll be as if you never moved it at all.

All you'll need to do is create a desktop shortcut. The reg file will be
called Encrypted1.reg but it doesn't matter. The reason is I used two
 registry entries when testing OTFE.

 ---8<---

if exist Encrypted1.reg del Encrypted2.reg

if exist Encrypted1.reg rename Encrypted1.reg Encrypted2.reg
start /w regedit /e Encrypted1.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!"
echo.
if not exist Encrypted1.reg echo Error! Something went wrong. Backup not
echo successful.
if exist Encrypted1.reg echo Success! Your Unencrypted registry entries for
The Bat! are
echo backed up!

especially as he's been popping in to comment on other problems.

I think I'll stick with what I've got until I can run with OTFE

Then this is definitely simpler than the TB utility, which seems to
have some areas of, er..., hypersensitivity.

Done. And it seems to work well. This does copy over my

Okay, let me ask one last question. Am I correct to say that this
process assumes that my identity in Windows XP and my directory
structure for TB does not change from computer to computer? If that
happens, what would I have to change?

3.0.9.2 attachments

2005-03-02 Thread Roelof Otten
Hallo tbbeta,

I needed to send a file as attachment. TB decided to split it up in
parts, while it wasn't configured to do so.
And said parts couldn't be put together into a proper message with
an attachment (at least not by TB) (I sent it to a mailing list).
The received message lacked some headers, that is to say, these
headers were found in the message body:

,- [ ]
| Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
| Subject: Re: [DB BSV Krakeel]National Pen
| MIME-Version: 1.0
| Content-Type: multipart/mixed;
| boundary="--C91EE1FB1A4702C8"
`-

Therefore there was no way that TB could show the received
  attachment. :-(
When needed, I can send archived copies of the original message, the
five parts and the new construct...

It is sad to see you challenged by ordinary English. This was about
the resolution of the pictures, not the quality of the camera.
Besides, the quality of the optics influences the quality of the
picture much more than the electronics.

Next week we are starting digital photography 101 and have one opening

English is very CLEARLY not your first language, so I'll refrain from commenting
on yours.

Hair-splitting isn't a good idea at the best of times, but it's less so when
attempting to make spurious points, when in the context you were using it,
resolution/quality appear quite interchangeable.

> Besides, the quality of the optics influences the quality of the

No kidding. However, we weren't discussing that. YOU wrote initially:

Not much reference there to lens quality. And I stand by my initial statement:
that is clearly incorrect information you are giving out if the person doing the
image manipulation has even the vaguest idea as to what they're doing.

When being a smart-arse, it's preferable to be former rather than the latter.
You might consider it.

Anyway, this is:

a) dead-horsed, whether you've been away or not, and

b) a poor attempt to drag a losing discussion off-course.

I'm doing something simiar with Thunderbird. I use PowerArchiver with a
backup script to backup the Thunderbird directories (Program and data)
to a USB drive then use a batch file with the powerarchiver commandline
to delete the old data off the computer and unparck what I had just
backed up from another computer. Works quite well. I can point you to
where to get the software and send you the backup script and restore
batch file if you want.

Second way is compile EXE with option "Build with runtime packages".
In this case all exe-file will be splitted on some bpl-files (common
Borland libraries are very big) and little exe-file.

I don't know real proportions in the case of TheBat, but for example
exe-file may be 95kb instead 1025kb. :)
But may be 9Mb instead 10Mb ;)

Question to developers - what size of exe-file can be?

Pre-beta Ticker oddity

2005-03-02 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Hi TB Beta list members,

When I open the mail ticker with more than one mail in the list, it
seems to me that the first Message list entry is scrolled off at the
top - even when there aren't enough messages to warrant a scroll.

Anyone else seen this?

Also, I noticed that the Find Message dialog buttons have been
replaced by a toolbar that is currently text only. Not sure if that's
a "good thing" (tm).

I thought so, too, but the UPX site says: "no memory overhead for your
compressed executables because of in-place decompression." I don't know how
this could be verified, however.

But then again, who hasn't got the HD space to store a 10MB exe versus a
4MB exe? I fail to see any sense in a compressed executable, and for
transfers an archiver does a better job anyway because multiple files can
be bundled.

YESS well, that is to say, not in the message pane (if I
understand YOU correctly that is) but right clicking in the headers that I
 do see does the trick.

What I got is: account tree to the left, then message headers on top,
message at the bottom and headers in the middle. Right clicking there works!

You can also do this by actually clicking in the header pane. The

 Here's a fix for it...

 Start The Bat!

I wasn't actually asking for confirmation however, they did disappear
after the fourth and reappeared the 5th, I didn't have to close TB! down
 to get them back.

I agree it shouldn't happen but, the fact some people just open and then
close things X amount of times just to see what happens is beyond me.

Thanks, David, but I currently use TB, not Thunderbird. I like the

basic - still suit me better. Anyway, I am already on the road, and so

So far so interestingly good.

No interrupted connections, forcing a restart yet, and I
managed to browse all new mail in the thread that followed
your announcement.

Let's keep the fingers crossed. If this works, then TB! may
very well work a lot better at work.

The scripts can easily be adapted for use with The Bat!. :) All you'd
have to do is change the directories the commands point to. Wasn't
trying to get you to use Thunderbird. :)

I'm not questioning the fact of weather TB! should do it or not, I agree
with you that it shouldn't. I just find your behaviour as strange as the
 behaviour of the bug itself.

Right click spell check isn't working by the way... Oh yes, and I er, have no

There are a lot of translators. With this new version all the menus
have changed his place on he file we translate, so we need to
translate it another time or copy&paste from the old strings.

Now we have another problem. The compiler we use don't allow us to
translate the menus due to a bug. We need a new compiler.

Good .bat. Here you have it more polished ;-)

If it closes without any message all went ok. If some went bad the DOS
window will remain open and you will see the error.

PD: Change extension of the file to .bat

Thank you very much but the batch file I sent was just a small part of what

I want to keep the default images, which looked fine before. Ever since the
toolbars update, they don't though. As far as I know TBX (the toolbar
component), there's just 1 setting that needs to be toggled to get the
images to display properly (to see what I mean, check out the image attached
to this message: ).

While writing this message, another weird thing happened: the toolbar and
menu disappeared, and hotkeys (at least Ctrl+Enter) stopped working. I had
to press Esc, choose Yes (Save the message), then reopen it before I got the
toolbars and menu back.
