Because they're a bit different. IMAP is a protocol for storing your
mail online and access it remotely. POP3 is a protocol to retrieve
messages.

MP When trying to do so, one gets a screen suggesting to create a new account.

That's a reasonable suggestion. ;-)
Your POP3 account has lots of (or a few) messages stored locally, in
a local folder structure. An IMAP account stores its messages in a
remote folder structure.
Now suppose that the folder names in your local structure don't
conflict with those in your remote structure and you switch from POP3
to IMAP. What would you suppose to happen?
- local folders stay local and remote folders stay remote? So when you
access your account from one computer, it'll show different messages
compared to accessing it from another, because some systems also have
local folders... Kind of confusing
- or should the local folders need to get transfered to the server?
Automatically? Without you telling what stuff you want to get stored
online and what not?
And these options are what you get with different folder names. I can
mention a few even more confusing options when the folder names match.
;-)

Considering this, the only sensible thing to do is creating a new
account. That way yo know what's local and what's remote and you can
decide at your own time when and what you want to transfer from local
to remote storage.
When you've got a main account with a 5 GB message base like I do,
these issues are getting kind of real important.

Hello Mark,

I believe that IS possible. You can change from POP3 to any of the
advanced protocols. It's apparently not possible to downgrade though (I
guess because advanced structures are created in the account for those
protocols and removing them isn't possible without loss of data created
in the meantime...?).

For me at least, for all POP3 accounts, I can go to
Account/Properties/Transport, then in the second block (Receiving
messages) on the right there is a Change protocol button. It doesn't
appear for IMAP accounts for the reason stated above.
The texts may be different for you, I am not looking at an English TheBat!
but a Czech one so I am just guessing the English labels.

Please disregard my answer in case you have found that button, used it and
got a different dialog than expected.

Just want to emphasise Roelof's point above that one great benefit of
IMAP is that you can copy your local mail to the IMAP folders and it
will make its way back onto the server.

From pop3 to Imap

2013-06-13 Thread Mark Partous

Hello Beta-Bats,

Perhaps not a beta-subject, but what is the reason why it is not possible to
turn a Pop3-account
into an imap-account?

When trying to do so, one gets a screen suggesting to create a new account.
