Multiple "OR" conditions in a filter

2004-10-15 Thread Michael L. Wilson

Hi,

I have setup a filter with ten words that I never want to see in an
email. I setup a filter with OR statements between them. This mostly
works, but when two words appear in an email, the email seems to slip
through the filter. What is the correct way to setup a filter which
will detect 1 or more of these ten words?

Can't answer your question but that points to widespread
misunderstanding (not by you) of "OR", which is *inclusive*. In your
case it should work on any one of the words appearing and on
combinations.

The condition you are encountering is *EITHER-OR*.

If we could agree on this between us and with RITLabs the conditionals
should be changed accordingly.

Basically it is [OR subject contains "bad word"]

I cannot put the bad word here because the moderators do not like it.

"Either-or" "and/or" both would be good.

Also, the "contains any of" idea is good with a list of words.

Hello Michael,

MLW> Basically it is [OR subject contains "bad word"]

OR subject contains "bad word" means that ORed is condition, not the
words in parameter, so filter you've decribed should trigger only when
both words are in subject.

To achieve functionality you need you should setup filter in the
following way:

1.
subject contains "bad"
OR subject contains "word"

2.
subject contains any of "bad
 word
 something else"

I have a spam-filter (most conditions date from before I started using K9 -
and even now it catches messages that K9 doesn't seem to be able to catch
(mail with a lot of words and a gif)).

Since the NFS (this may have been reported earlier) it takes a long time
before I can open this particular filter with all these conditions.

Do you think it would help gathering these conditions in only a few,
using the "contains any of"?

I copied the filter, then started to transform the copy as described before,
but it's a real pain. Each time I add a newline, it takes a long time before
the screen is rebuild and I can add the next word.

I didn't know that lists could be handled that way, nice! BTW, I'm not
sure if I have suggested it before or not, but I think that, for long
lists of this type (or for example addresses), it would be nice if the
name/path of a text file containing the list could be specified.

Makes me wonder why we have a list rule "g. Sigs are fine, but don't make
