Originally it had a Quick Search like box, even though it never did
work. It was abandoned before the current release. Not sure if it will
be resurrected.

I'm sorry, I can't answer this. It may require some testing.
Unfortunately, this is an area that was introduced with some
omissions and inconsistencies.

The whole thing, while flexible, is a tad confusing and some of the
menu choices are still missing.

Try creating a new menu bar, add the items to that menu, setup your
shortcuts and then hide the menu bar.
