beta/47

2002-03-11 Thread Maxim Masiutin

Hello TBBETA!

beta/47 will be packed with RAR 3.0. This makes the file 400KB
smaller, but unextractable by RAR 2.x.

RAR 3.0 can be downloaded from www.rarsoft.com

Hello TBBETA!

The Bat! 1.54 Beta/47 is available at
http://www.ritlabs.com/ftp/pub/the_bat/beta/tb154b47.rar

[-] Fixed AV on exit that could sometimes occur
[-] If an S/MIME signer or recipient had multiple certificates when using CryptoAPI
mode, The Bat! now displays the list of the certificates and asks to select a
certificate from the list.
[-] Fixed display problems of the message list header
[-] Bug with slow HTML entering (it took 5-10 seconds before displaying some HTML
files) should be fixed
[-] When a fatal POP3 error occurs, the error message was overwritten in the log line
of the main form by the "0 messages received line"

Just to warm up an old discussion:

_Don't_ spend your time searching for new packing tools.

_Do_ spend time fixing bugs.

Ok, you save 400kB each download now - but had you tested b47
properly, then it would have worked and now need for b47a would have
been there. That would have saved a lot more bandwidth...

S> Same here.

First off, I use Powerachiver 2001 and it extracted no problem.

Secondly, TB! does load and does not ask for directories to be installed
   in...

Your not supposed to run the exe file, just extract it to your existing
Bat directory overwriting the existing thebat.exe.

From the behaviour your describing your trying to run the unrared exe
file without it being in your existing Bat folder and expecting it to
   install itself.

It's just an updated executable, not a full blown install.

I confess having an archived file is much more convenient for me. I
have three different Versions of TB!.exe files in the same directory.
Using the Archived files I can easily extract them and rename it
before putting them to the Program Folder.

Also I think that in these days every 'Standard' configured System has
a good Archive Tool.

As a last argument for Archiving files is that .exe files could carry
unwanted codes where archived files are not executables and so a
better security. I know a lot of people who will never accept anything
except archived files.

Have a nice day.

AFAIK, this is not exact:
 Cut--
RAR 3.0 archives can be unpacked by any RAR version beginning
from RAR 2.9, currently it is 2.9 and 3.0. RAR 3.0 can unpack
archives created by all older RAR versions.

I use both of them but unfortunately none could open the latest beta

Before rushing, may I suggest you to test 7-zip
, which is excellent free packer, which
achieves even greater compression ratio than WinRAR 3. If you don't
look into great protection (I'm talking about protection when archive
file itself is damaged - RAR is superior here), then 7z might be even
better choice (The Bat! 1.54beta47b executable compressed with 7z and
converted to self-extracting archive is still 80kB smaller than
original RAR file.

I agree. I just purchased Powerarchiver just because Winzip does not

UltimateZip 2.7 Beta 2 does work. While a Beta, UltimateZip seems to
work quite well for all formats it support, including the new RAR
version. IMHO better than all other products I have tried.

Also, apologies for the fire storm I caused in stating what version
of XP I am running. I am NOT a Beta tester for Windows XP. It would
appear I was quite incorrect about the version I am running. The
place I got the information about SP1 was when I looked at everything
I had installed under add/remove programs. There are multiple entries
for the patches I have installed that refer to "Windows XP Hotfix
(SP1) []".  When I look under Control Panel -> System -> General
it only says "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002". When I
look at boot time, and under the Command window, it says "Microsoft
Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]". You tell me what version it is. I am
not now, nor do I intend to be a Windows guru, programmer, or anything
else related to Microsoft. This is just the standard Windows XP
Professional update purchased off the shelf. Windows is inflicted on
me just as most people because of the applications (mostly Office)
needed to co-exist with the rest of the world.

Finally, the RAR issue has been declared a dead topic, and the whole
thread about "Windows XP SP1" is quite irrelevant to getting The Bat
1.54 in a finalized production release. I personally want to see it
baselined at some point so that the developers can move on to full
IMAP4 functionality

I laud you for your response above. Any HOTFIX, as listed under the
Windows XP Add Remove Programs WILL reflect SP1 as those hotfixes will be
included with the service pack due late 2nd, early 3rd quarter 2002
(although we all know Microsoft's ability to hit a projected deadline).

I was not intentionally picking on you nor attempting to create a "firestorm"
of abusive and obnoxious comments. I just had problems believing a SP1 beta
tester, with ALL the damn legal forms we had to sign, would publicize the
fact that he was running the beta version of WinXP Service Pack 1 and NOT
only that but request an outside company fix problems with software running
under Windows XP beta Service Pack 1 when they probably haven't seen it yet nor
if the code changes to XP will be final.

Sorry for my perceived bashing of you.

That seems to fix the Help | Version problem. Now displaying Beta 47
as it should be.

With all due respect, I don't think you understand this, Eddie. A
self-extracting archive is still an archive. You can store it,
re-name it, do anything to it that you can to to any other archive,
including archive it inside another archive, if you want. But it has
an .exe file extension, rather than .zip, .rar, or dot-anything. And
when you double click it, you can extract it to anywhere you want.

That is really the ONLY difference, other than the fact that the
self-extracting format has an overhead of a few bytes compared to the
original file.

I don't see one bit of functionality that you gain from having an
archive that relies on an underlying program to open and extract its
contents, as opposed to a self-extracting archive, that needs no
underlying program, period. Do you, now, after reading this?

Best,

Yuki
