There isn't, as long as there are any tasks active, TB won't close.

When you're connecting to your server have you tried to abort the
connection from the CC, I don't mean to close th CC, as that merely
hides it, but using the Abort button.

Did you try other IMAP clients, to see whether they've got problems
disconnecting your server?

I never have. Mind you, I'm still working with a stone-age version of

(according to the CC). You can press 'Cancel' and 'Abort' all you want,
and no joy. I've just kind of learned to live with it.

Since I upgraded to version 3 I have not had this problem once.

Before version 3 my bat! would lock up (during message download
from any of the several mail servers I use) several times per day
and I would have to kill the task from Windows Task Manager. Abort
never worked for me either. Very frustrating - especially if I
  forgot to restart the Bat!

I did learn that I could make the situation better if I used the
Dispatch Mail on Server and use Read and Delete and/or reduce the
number of messages in a batch if many had built up.

Has anyone else noticed the action buttons are now mis-labeled on
  the Pick e-mail addresses dialog? (They are now 4, 44, 3, 33, r,
s - not sure when this happened - hardly ever use that dialog - not
  a big deal really )

Yes, I have cleared the CC with the Abort button. The IMAP is cfg'd
to disconnect so in some cases there isn't anything in CC to abort.
Even in such a case, and where there are no apparent processes
running in Task Manager, I still get the some tasks are now active
  warning.

I don't mind killing the tasks manually, at least for now, if I can
  just find them.

No, not yet. I may give MozillaMail a try this weekend, as there is
a new app I want to try that is written for Moz but won't run in
FireFox. I do use two different IMAP servers at different hosts. But
TB! isn't giving any indication that would lead me to a specific
  connection problem.

2004-09-24 Thread Andrew Aronoff
Hello Terry,

But I _cannot_ get TB! to shut down.

I have this problem, too. The only way I can shut TB! is to reboot.
It's inconceivable that such an action should be necessary under W2K
SP4, but there's no way to kill the task. I can't do it with Task
Manager and KILL -F at the command line doesn't work, either.

AFAICT, the problem is caused by a very bad interface between TB! and
NAV. (I'm using NAV 2002.) Before I configured NAV to scan incoming
e-mail, I *never* had this problem. However, blaming the problem on
NAV is too easy. It's TB! that I can't kill as a process; I firmly
believe that there's no good reason for this other than some very
sloppy programming.

Has anyone found a solid solution to this?

I have noticed that the problem is most likely to occur after I resume
the PC from standby. If I use the browser to connect to any web site
first and *then* start up TB!, the freezing problem does not occur or,
at least, seems to occur less often.

Excellent! Excellent! I turned off e-mail scanning for Norton A/V
2003 and TB! shutdown normally. I don't know what other factors --
sleep, standby, etc -- affect it as I haven't experimented yet.

This *is* dumb -- an e-mail program too stupid to handle scanning
of incoming messages by common third-party packages. I mean, how
many people _don't_ run some sort of third-party A/V? Maybe it's
just TB!'s tolerance of Norton. In any case, quite disappointing
behavior from a package I've used and relied on for years.

  Thanks for the tip.

Re: TheBat! cannot close

2004-09-24 Thread Mark Wieder
Andrew-

You might want to look into NOD32 or another AV solution as a
replacement for Norton. I too have had my share of problems with the
TB/NAV combination - lng mail retrieval times, 100% CPU usage,
inability to kill tasks, and have not had this problem with NOD32. Of
course, I don't usually try to exit while TB is in the process of
retrieving mail.

I think the problem scenario is this: TB goes to retrieve mail, NAV
grabs the incoming mail to scan, and TB is in a locked thread waiting
for NAV to be done with its processing before handing it back to TB.
Then TB can continue putting the email in the right folder, executing
filters, etc. During this time NAV is working with the email in a
temporary file and copies need to be made, NAV checks permissions,
etc.

This is the way AV programs work and there's nothing wrong with this
process, but Norton AV seems to get its claws down very deep into
system processes to the point where nothing else can be done in the
meantime. I believe what's happening is that TB can't shut down
because it's waiting for Norton to relinquish its hold on a process
that TB has no control over.

Decreasing the frequency of mail checking might improve things. I have
mine set to check every five minutes and that seems to keep everyone
happy.

I have started using Windows 2000 later than you, but I _never_ had to boot

Only time TB! was involved was in one beta-version.
