Quoted text wrong color

2004-10-21 Thread Anthony G. Atkielski
I've noticed on a plain-text e-mail message I've received that the
second-level quoted text is maroon and bold, even though I had
previously set everything to plain black in the text editor for plain
text messages. I've only seen it on one message (not sure if other
messages met the criteria for second-level quotations, or whatever
triggers it).

I set all the HTML colors to black and plain and the maroon bold style
went away. But this was a plain text message so the HTML settings
should not have mattered (?).

I have read that a handful of people on this list have successfully
used The Bat! with either CrossOver Office or WINE. I'm not sure if
The Bat! will integrate into you desktop environment well enough so
that when you click on an e-mail link on a web page it will open.
However, The Bat! will work.

You may have to jump through some hoops to get The Bat! to install
until COO or WINE supports MSI installers.

Just to allay your fears a bit...

I deleted those files a long time ago and nothing ill has come of it.

Also, programs are not guaranteed that the contents of the Temp folder
with remain from session to session, so well-behaved programs, of
which Windows Installer is one, only store files in there for one run;
they do not expect them to be there next time.

There is no linux version of the bat! But there's a way. There's a
windows emulator called wine. Fedora probably comes with it. Otherwise
you can download the current version from www.winehq.org

In a console cd to your bat directory and try wine thebat.exe There
are some issues, so don't expect it to work as well as under windows
but all in all it works fairly well.

I don't know very much about Linux and Linux distros. However, we have
had extensive threads on tbot in regard to running The Bat! under Wine
on Suse and under Wine and Crossover on Xandros.

K> Can TB! be used as Fedora's e-mail client or is use of TB! limited

The answer is that it is not limited to Windows O/S. There are
work-arounds.

If you're not subscribed to tbot, click on the Silverstones link
below, scroll down and subscribe.

We've just finished a long Knoppix thread (another Linux distro) on
tbot. There are people very interested in using The Bat! on a Linux
platform, and people who are actually doing it successfully, albeit
with one or two limitations.

First thing to consider.

I use the Active Time Zone template on TheBat! version 2.12. The macro
works with the MyMacros plugin, which is available from
http://en.barin.com.ua/soft/mymacros/ . The latest information on the
MyMacros page is dated 4 August 2004. According to the page, "MyMacros
is a set of additional macros for The Bat! v2 ..." I haven't updated,
so I don't know if MyMacros 1.11a will work with TB! 3, or if MyMacros
has a version for TB! 3. Does anybody know???

There is another extended macro plugin for TheBat! available at
http://www.gaijin.at/tbpxmp.php . I think Gagin says that Extended
Macro Plugin 0.9.3 works with TheBat! v 3. Gaijin Macro Plugin 0.80
(the version whose Help file I've been toying with translating) has a
GetReg macro; perhaps 0.9.3 has a GetReg macro. Perhaps Gaijin's
GetReg macro can be made to work, in place of MyMacro's RegRead macro,
in the Active time Zone template. Unfortunately, all of Gajin's
documentation is in German. Fortunately, German can be roughly
translated with Google's Language Tools
http://www.google.com/language_tools .

Second thing to consider.
=

MyMacro's RegRead macro is at the heart of the ActiveTimeZone
template. I discovered early on that if you run the template from an
account that doesn't have both read AND write privileges for the
system registry's TimeZoneInformation key administrative privileges,
%RegRead(...\TimeZoneInformation will return an error message, and the
ActiveTimeZone Quick Template will return nothing at all. By default,
non-administrator users' TimeZoneInformation privileges are limited to
read only. It may be necessary to have a member of your system's
Administrator Group run regedt32.exe and change non-administrator users'

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation

privileges to both read and write.

Using: The Bat! v2.12.00, BayesIt! 0.5.9,
   MyMacros 1.11, gMacrosPlugin 0.80
   Windows 2000 v5.0 - Build 2195 - Service Pack 4

Bug? Failure of Macros to Expand

2004-10-21 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB User Discussion List,

I've posted this to the beta list, but didn't get a
response. So I thought I'd try here :-)

Attempting to pass the folder name (or any other macro)
to a batch file, the macro is not expanding. For
example, a filter with the Execute action and command
line:

   c:\test_bat.cmd %FolderName

receives %FolderName - not expanded to the actual
folder name. Is there some trick to get the macro to
expand? Or is this a bug?

Strange characters in view source

2004-10-21 Thread Thomas Fernandez
Hello TBBETA,

I see weird characters in the headers. Example:

X-Priority:? (Normal)
Message-ID:?lt;[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: TBUDL <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

There is also a square replacing the blank and the T after the colon
in the To: line, but the c&p from the source view (F9) doesn't show
this. In fact, many headers show either question marks or squares when
using the source view. No weird characters in the header view
(crtl-K).

Does anybody see this, or is it my system? I didn't see this under TB
v2.12.

Michael, I sure respect the fact that you worked on Microsoft and have
a large experience and so, but come on. If everybody answered like
that, we even wouldn't have to discuss it on the list.

Yeah, Windows can be the reason sometimes - as sometimes the program
is the reason.

MLW> So, before you jump on the instability of The Bat!, backup, reformat
MLW> and reinstall. You will be amazed at the speed of your new machine
MLW> and how stable it is. Every six months...I am not kidding.

I'm sorry, but I'll say what I used to tell people who worked with me:
this is like healing a headache with an axe. You'll heal it, no doubt.
But what was the reason? And if the bugs keep on coming?

No need for those 6 hours every 6 months. I run my Win2000
installation for 3 and a half years right now. But I can understand
what you mean: no users act always carefully or use the same software.
There's software which is completely bug-free, some others not very
much... reformatting can be a good thing, sure, but isn't always
necessary, unless you know you are totally careless about browsing
habits, not using anti-virus and so. We're never safe, but we know how
much we put ourselves in risk.

And allow me to say: every advanced Windows user will cry in
desperation when you say every Windows engineer do that. Maybe they
just do that because they're always needing to test or develop
something that requires that. ;-)

Anyway, it was a good suggestion: as a last and desperate try.

Since we remember (from the days of *that* signature of yours *g*) that you
are a teacher, critic and ecclesiastic (sp?) philosopher, may I ask what
position you did occupy there? [no stab at discrediting you or something

working for Microsoft, you know...]

I doubt that this is a plugin for The Bat - the archive does not contain a
.tbp file (which would be the plugin), and second, it does contain at least
one other files that makes me question the legal status of this archive...

I have three physical monitors attached to three physical
video cards (AGP GeForce 2/MX, PCI Diamond Viper 550, PCI
3Dfx Banshee) and use the multi-monitor capability that is
built in to Windows 2000 (which is also in WinME and WinXP).
I've never seen the point of different virtual screens,
since if I'm able to keep track of that many windows on ONE
physical screen anyway, what's the difference?

I write Windows software for a living and I can say with
assurance that applications that have no idea there is more
than one screen simply haven't checked. There are standard
system calls to get the number, size, resolution, color depth,
etc. of every active display. There is probably a call to
determine the layout of the displays, too, but I haven't needed
that one yet.

Yup. But since I have the "privilege" of supporting software
that is sometimes as much as 20 years old (but typically only
about 5-8 yrs old), I've developed a strong belief that all
abandoned (AKA unsupported) software should be either:

 (A) Automatically entered into the public domain, WITH source,
so that someone else may maintain it.

 (B) Upgraded (for FREE) to the next supported version.

(Sorry I took so long to respond, I was out of town)

You tweaked something else. :-)

It is very unlikely that you addressed the XPXP2 Event ID 4226 issue
by tweaking the registry. That can only be fixed by patching the
system files.

Well, whatever is limited, I ran into the limit almost hourly, so I
had to do something. Tweaking the registry has helped immensely. No
longer do I get the messages in the event log, but my Internet
connection seems faster.

This is a common misunderstanding about XPSP2. It throttles new
connections to limit to 10 ports being unconnected at one time. This is
completely different to having 10 connections. It limits how quickly the
OS can open ports and attempt to connect to services. It will slow down
port scanners for eg. It won't stop them, just rate limit their growth. I
sometimes have about 100 connections open now worries.

I wouldn't trust any third party `fix' to SP2, esp. as there is no need
for it.
