I too would like to know. I've had to abandon TB! a few months ago with 
the death of WinXP and am now struggling to try to make ThunderBird 
resemble the functionality that TB! gave me for years, but I ran into 
that extreme CPU usage long after apparently closing the program, almost 
every time I had to shut it down. I finally learned to monitor disk 
usage as well as that of the CPU, and force an 'End process" once the 
disk had been idle for at least 30 seconds, but it was a nuisance every 
time.
