Personally, I download the spam and forward it to SpamCop.

I present a plea to everyone not to use the services of 'SpamCop'
and/or any other of these 'vigilante' anti-spam sites. Most of these
'services' are a classical case of 'the cure being worse than the
disease'.

What happens with many of these anti-spam services is that they will
block the entire IP range from that server. So, a spammer is utilizing
'xyz.com' to send unsolicited EMail messages - and he is just one of
100 subscribers to xyz, the other 99 being legitimate
personal/business users. Once someone complains to one of the
anti-spam sites, all users of xyz.com (identified by IP address) will
be blocked as originators of spam. So, 99 legitimate subscribers are
blocked due to the actions of one spam operation. And, by the time
the anti-spam operation is reported, he/she has moved on anyway, but
the existing users are still blocked.

I speak from experience. A former ISP subscribed to one of these
'anti-spam' services, and did not allow individual users to configure
the settings. MANY EMail messages from colleagues and potential
customers were 'bounced' with a message stating that they had been
'black-listed'. Guess how many customers returned to my site?? I
sought out, and subscribed to, a service that promised not to
implement any spam filtering.

Define your own spam filters, delete the messages, and move on. Life
is too short to worry about it. Sure spam is obnoxious, but the
'cure' offered by many of these sites is much worse.

I need a 'snapshot'

2002-04-18 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

I have been using the 'View Threads by Reference' option for all the various
newslists to which I belong. This works great until someone uses the
'Reply To' function to start a new message subject (something that is
never condoned on this list). One particular list, with traffic about
the same as this list, presents quite a few instances of this
undesirable behavior.

I have written a few messages to the list, requesting that people not
use the 'Reply To' when they start new message subjects. To many,
my request does not make sense, as their software views 'By Subject'.

I would like to be able to get a 'snapshot' of the message tree that
shows the structure looks like when someone uses the 'Reply To' in an
inappropriate manner. I would probably want to store it as a .jpg
file on my web site and then provide the link to the list so that they
could view the graphic. Does anyone know how I can get a 'picture' of
the message tree?

Perhaps I can gain some converts to TB! by showing how useful this
'View Threads by Reference' can really be.

Importing Messages from Pegasus

2002-04-08 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

I have a huge number of old EMail messages in Pegasus format. I have
been able to import old messages from some of the Pegasus accounts
(those with a small number of messages). However, the import routine
chokes on the one account that has probably 30,000+ messages. When I
attempt to import, the routine just keeps going back to the screen
where I am supposed to point to the Pegasus account folder(s).

I would attempt to break up the messages into smaller groups, but I
can't even run Pegasus anymore. I keep getting a run-time error every
time I try to start it.

Has anyone else had problems importing large numbers of Pegasus
messages? Any ideas on how I can import these messages into TB!

I understand there are keyboard shortcuts where I can type a keyword

 what they are.

Is there a way to do this perhaps using another application or is this
a high priority feature that The Bat team should look at?

The functionality I am looking for is similar to that found for
 Outlook at the following url:

 http://www.emailtemplates.com/et/

 Any suggestions?

Take a look at 'Classic Clipboard'

The full version ($25) handles about 90,000 clips with 26 'Hot Clips'.
There is a free version that will give you about 3200 clips.

Date related cookies

2002-04-04 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

I am interested in starting to attach cookies to my outgoing messages.
Some of the cookies on this list, especially those of Jernej Simonèiè
are simply great!

However, I would like to use history related cookies, specifically
tying today's date to a particular cookie that relates what happened
in the 'Old West' on this date in history.

Has anyone used such a feature in TB! so far?

Basically, the cookie file would have up to 366 entries, each entry
being one or more lines. The cookie macro would have to find the
entry matching the current month and day.

Reply to All Issue

When using 'Reply to All', is there an option that I can 'check' so

Another Wish

2002-03-13 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

As long as we are working on wish lists, I would like to see a feature that
would allow printing of a high-lighted block of text.

High-light the desired text,
Right-Click,
One of the available selections would be 'Print'.
Printing to the 'default' printer, only, would be quite acceptable.

Traffic Congestion

2002-01-17 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

This will probably sound like a complaint, but I'm just wondering if
it is normal to see this much message traffic on this list. I joined
the list on Jan 11th, 607 messages since then (of course, some are my
own). Today, this list almost exceeded the combined message count for
4 book dealer lists to which I belong.

I'm learning a lot - still don't understand how to do PGP - grateful
for the info on SPAM filtering.

Numbers in the Subject Line

2002-01-15 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

How can I turn off the auto-numbering that occurs when replying to
messages? If another party and I reply back and forth several times,
the subject line has a number that increments each time that I reply.
This could certainly be useful at times, but distracting at other
times. I note that many of the messages on this user list do not have
the numbers, so there must be a method for disabling this function. A
cursory search of the help files reveals no solution.

Distribution Lists

2002-01-13 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

I'm quite amazed at the number of TB! users who used to be Pegasus
users. I, too, used Pegasus for quite a number of years. I waited
... waited ... waited ... for version 4, only to be disappointed. I
started looking around for another EMail client and happened upon TB!
As I recall, I didn't even wait for the trial period to expire before
I registered the program. I'm quite pleased with the program.
Perhaps we should call ourselves FPUNUTB! (Former Pegasus Users Now
Using TB!). I just recently signed up for this user's list and I have
learned a great deal in the past several days - the hints on SPAM
filtering have been quite useful.

One thing that Pegasus did quite well, and I just have not discovered
the means within TB!, is the capability to send EMail messages to a
'distribution list' without having all the EMail addresses displayed
to the recipients.

I have two distribution lists that I use once in a while. One list
contains about 300 addresses, the other contains about 150 addresses.
How can I set these up within TB!?

Display Fonts - Again

2002-01-12 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

Thanks to those who replied earlier regarding my display font
question. The Andale Mono font is not to be found in my
c:\windows\font folder so I guess it must have not been restored when
I re-installed everything after the hard drive failure.

However, there is a plethora of fonts in that particular directory,
but only a very few are accessible to me from the 'read message'
window. When I right-click in the 'read message' frame, one of the
options is 'Preferences' - clicking that and choosing the 'Display'
tab shows a button for changing the font. However, only about 10
choices are shown when I attempt to choose a new font. How can I get
TB! to allow more font choices in the 'read message' window? I detest
the courier font.

TB! displays only fixed pitch fonts, as they are the only ones used
 (within the PTV).

Thank you! That makes sense.

I have down-loaded the Andale Mono font from the microsoft.com site
