FWIW, I just downloaded these messages to Agent, and confirmed what I
already suspected: Agent caught this and displayed Oleg's message as a
followup to Christian's. I'm guessing this is because Agent using
Subject when it doesn't find an In-Reply-To. I see MANY more broken
threads in The Bat! than in Agent--and Agent doesn't seem to make
mistakes doing this, either.

OTOH, Stan's 'Re[2]' and MaXxX's 'Re[2]' both start new threads in
Agent. I think The Bat! is the only email client that handles these.
Are there others?

This is why %Singlere is such a handy template macro. ;-b

Yup! Which is why I use it, too.

I think it %Singlere should be a default, to be overwritten only by
folder-specific templates for The Bat! mailing lists, if desired. Even
then, the numbers can be a pain if you decide to read your mailing
list mail with another client.

I doubt that there is any RFC that addresses the use of these numbers.
In fact, when I, as a The Bat! newbie, posted to the Agent beta list,
one of the RFC gurus let me know in no uncertain terms that my email
client was breaking threads.

Another major feature of Agent is that it does a very good job of
following RFC standards. I would hope that the Bat programmers would
aim toward the same goal.

Hello, fellow Bat-lovers.

Interesting to know.

> Probably there is some alternative way to find threads, for example,
> like you said - using subject.

I just checked Agent Help, and here's what I found:

  Enable threading by subject

Check this box to have Agent include messages with the same subject
under the same thread, even if the follow-up message doesn't contain
a valid reference to the original. People frequently mispost
responses and this helps match follow-ups with the message to which
  they are responses.

Clearly, I have this option selected. What this means is that Agent
threads first using In-Reply-To and References; if these don't exist
or are invalid, it then uses Subject. It's very nice that this is an
option.

Also from Agent Help:

 Start a New thread...

Check this box to create a new thread when a follow-up Usenet
message's subject is different than the main message's subject.
When unchecked, Agent attaches follow-up messages to the
original even when the subject of the thread changes.

Expand thread if necessary to highlight current body pane
  message

Check this box to have Agent expand the thread in the Message
List pane, so that the current message is visible.

  Initial thread setting

Select the thread state you wish to see in the Message List
pane whenever you open Agent. The choices are collapse all
threads, expand all threads, expand unread threads (i.e., any
thread containing unread messages), and expand threads with
  unread bodies.

Three more very nice options. (Even though Usenet is mentioned, these
all work for email, too.)

How about it, Bat programmers?

Now this not anymore related to TheBat, but as many of us still use
Agent (for news): you can change that! In GeneralPrefs/MessageList I
have in ReplyPrefixes

"re re[1] re[2] re[3] re[4] r aw antwort zu ref"

which accepts re[2] and several others, e.g. ones generated from
non-english M$ mail clients.

I wish TheBat had a similar option...

Peter

BTW, Netscape Messenger handled all these things correctly, it broke
though in some other places where Bat didn't, but in general threads are
working better there.

Probably there is some alternative way to find threads, for example,
like you said - using subject.
